| We are in one of the larger PG County public high schools, over 2500 kids, which I find daunting. We "lotteried" in to a smaller DC public school, around 700 kids, so less than a third of what we're dealing with now, & they have an IB program, which our school doesn't. But, because we're MD residents, it's gonna cost us, nothing like a private school, but still paying. So wondering, would you pay for a smaller student body, & POSSIBLY better options, ie-IB curriculum? |
| Which DC high school worth its salt has only 700 kids & has IB? Do you mean someplace like Eastern HS with 2% of kids proficient? |
2% proficient in IB, or overall? Where did you get this info? |
| Anything in DC that would have seats for out of district kids is going to be worse than your local HS. |
| I’d move or choose private or homeschool over either of those options. |
OP here. Surprisingly, we were offered seats in several DC public schools. We did it just to see, because I'm just not happy with our local. Never thought we'd have a chance, let alone get multiple offers. |
| Could you move? |
| No, that makes no sense. |
My house is paid for. Absolutely not. |
Rent somewhere. Rent out your current house. |
|
Why not apply to the PGCPS IB program?
Those class sizes are tiny. |
| You have to tell us which schools, OP, for us to tell you. |
| You already pay about $20k per year in taxes for public school, whether you have a kid that attends or not, whether you have a kid or not. |
Bowie HS |
Do you really want to transport your student to DC every single day for what might not be significantly different from Bowie HS? And then have to deal with schlepping them back and forth for social activities and sports extra circulars? Does AA county do out of county transfers? I think that would be a much easier lift for you logistically. I personally wouldn't do it. |
