Poorly drained soil killing my Skip Laurels. Any recs for screening evergreen shrubs tolerate clay?

Hi I’ve got really thick clay type poor draining soil. I dug wide hole and put in mulch mixed soil and have spent hundreds on slip laurels. Any recommendations on a fast or moderately fast growing privacy shrub that can tolerate poorly draining soil? Native or non native even. Would Nellie Stevens holly be a good choice? Something green and nice that provides privacy. Not like huge trees like arborvitae but something trimmable that gets like 20” tall or less.

I hope the 'Less than 20 inches' is a typo.

What sort of sun/shade situation do you have?
