Changing counties after acceptance to TJ

We are moving to VA this summer for my spouses job. His employer will put us in temporary housing in Fairfax until we decide on a neighborhood and buy a house.

My current 7th grader seems like a potential good fit for TJ. Good enough that we will apply.

If he applies as a Fairfax resident and does get in, could we move to another county served by TJ or would his spot be contingent on staying in Fairfax.

Wondering if it makes sense to push for temporary housing in the neighborhood we think we want. Which would mean researching neighborhoods now.

if you get in from Fairfax County you need to stay in the county. If you move to Loudoun you lose your slot.

By regulation, a student who changes his or her residence to a cooperating school division that has exceeded its percentage (or “cap”) for the student’s class at TJHSST may not continue to attend TJHSST. You, therefore, must notify the Admissions Office prior to any relocation to insure continued enrollment at TJHSST.”

How long does the temporary housing last?

My thought is if he gets into TJ we would stay a year so that we don’t put him through 4 school changes in 3 years. We would probably need to pay the rent for some of that.

Is a school division the same as a school district or as a school pyramid? Could we move to another High School zone in Fairfax?

You can move to another zone within Fairfax. If the kid is in 7th grade now, then they would not be in TJ until fall of 2024.
You could switch to a middle school that does not get many students admitted, and have a higher chance of admission.

Yes, you can move as long as it is in Fairfax County.

We were thinking of putting him in a parochial K-8 which is what he’s in now. Is there an advantage to coming from certain middle schools? How do you know which ones?

He probably won’t get into TJ if he doesn’t go to a FCPS middle school.

Most of the slots for TJ and the other lottery schools are for kids already in the local public school system.
