Thoughts on the 2023 BMW X1?

I think it looks nice. Anyone have one and can share if they like it? Pros/Cons vs other models in the segment.

Joke of a car op. Just get a Honda.

They put fewer tech features in the entry level models to keep the costs down. Look at the X3.

There is a review in the Feb/March issue of Car & Driver magazine, p. 72. They like the interior design, found steering and brake feel to be numb, were challenged by the screen-based climate controls, and found some slack in throttle response. It was characterized as fun to drive, to be sized well for narrow roads and small parking spots, and is overall a practical vehicle.

Hi OP here - just curious why you think so. Styling, functionality, performance, cost? It actually seemed like a decent value compared to similar vehicles.

Buy an Audi Q3 if you really want that type of car.

Personally, I would want reliability so I would buy an NX Lexus 350.

Bottom line that BMW has like no resale value and reliability stinks.

Check JD Power ratings for reliability; BMW is near the top. Lexus is reliable but extraordinarily dull to drive, and performs sluggishly in comparison. Any BMW will be more agile and more fun to drive. Audis are competitive in features and price to BMW, but usually lack the sportiness and fun-to-drive factor, if that matters to you. The Korean and Japanese alternatives may provide better value for money and are perfectly functional - BMWs tend to be expensive in comparison but, again, more fun. Mercedes has a disappointing reputation for reliability, said to be associated with their complex electronic systems more than with their mechanicals.

When you build it out with basic options I get an MSRP of $45k. That seems way too expensive. I’d go for an M3 before I’d pay that for an X1.

So the hood driving may apply to other models, but the X1 is front wheel drive which is generally the antithesis of good handling. I’ve found all the new BMWs with their electric steering really dull and numb and lacking road feel. It’s also a raised hatch vs a car based SUV but maybe you don’t need a car that big. I would spec it out and than shop around for other cars.

RWD 5 speed manual 2023 at about $80k is still better value than dropping $45k on an X1.

While an X1 will get you an introduction to the brand, I see mostly downsides with the purchase. It’s not good value for your money, it’s BMWs entry level car with a cheap interior, small engine, poor resale, not great handling, and still have expensive maintenance costs. And if you are buying it for the badge, it’s one of their lowest models and everyone knows it.

You can buy a pre owned X3/5 in that budget of a new X1.

I think it’s cute

I just sold my X1 and got an X3. Pay the extra money and get the X3. The X1 is nothing special for the price.
