Would you buy fertility medicine from craigslist or topix?

Anonymous
My insurance doesn't cover drugs and I see postings, some from this area, from people trying to sell their leftovers. The prices seem considerably less than what I am paying right now, so it would be a huge help financially. If I meet the person in person, I can verify if she looks sketchy and also see if the box has been tampered with and verify the expiration date. Would you do this? Have you done this?

Personally, I would do this, but under the circumstances you mentioned, where you're meeting in person (after emailing back and forth a few times to make sure they sound legit as well). My meds were covered, so I often passed them on to other people I knew, but I never sold them. You might try asking your clinic (and others you know who've had infertility) if there are any donated meds available.

I purchased all my drugs this way - craigslist. I also met with the seller at a public location and have never had any issues.

I bought all of my IVF meds off FreeGaragesale dot com. Never had a problem. Paid FedEx COD or met the seller locally for pickup.

Isn't it illegal to sell meds like this?

I have some leftover unopened meds and I'd be happy for someone who's having trouble affording meds to use them, but I thought I had to donate them back to my clinic and let them dispense them to patients. I don't want to sell them, but I thought it was illegal even to give them away via CL or other sites???

It is illegal to sell meds. While it doesn't make it right, the people seeking IF drugs have a legitimate prescription for these drugs (or at least you expect that they do) and are looking for a lower cost means of acquiring these prohibitively expensive drugs, so a market for these drugs has been created.

There is truly no difference is donating meds directly to someone or giving them to your clinic to give them to someone, as your clinic isn't a pharmacy and is not licensed to dispense drugs.

To the 11:13 poster. Just curious to know what meds you have available. If you are donating them and they are what I need (I am totally self-pay!!!), then I would love to take them off your hands! If we go to the same clinic, then maybe we could even coordinate through them???

Yes, it might be illegal, but when you are paying out of pocket for all of your meds and IVF, you get desperate. I paid $38,987.00 last year for my infertility treatments. All of that was paid out of pocket because my insurance didn't cover a dime. This was done on a HHI of $115K, so you can imagine the financial strain. I had a prescription for all of the meds I was seeking, I just needed to find a way to get them for less expensive, as I was injecting approximately $700-900 worth of medication in my body DAILY.

I spent so much $$ on cycles that I didn't want to risk anything with bad drugs. To me, it's in for a penny, in for a pound. You just don't want to have to 2nd guess yourself if it doesn't work and think - was it because the drugs weren't 100% effective?

I was at SG.

All I have left is Gonal-F (I think 2 or 3 boxes?) from my IUI cycle and a pack of BCPs that I was going to use for IVF but never started the cycle (SG said they can't accept the BCPs as a donation for some reason; they told me to dispose of them myself). You're welcome to either if they're what you need. My insurance covered most of the cost so I'm not looking to recoup any $, just want to get rid of them and have someone else use them.

I am the 12:22 poster. I am definitely interested in the Gonal-f, as that is what I need. Email me at grnhaus1@hotmail.com. TIA!!!
