I'm trying to find some new bathing suits, specifically, tankinis and board shorts or bathing-suit material shorts, like the ones they sell through Athleta. Anyone buy these at Athleta or Lands End (the other place I saw that had a decent selection)? What was the quality like? Also, any suggestions on where to get a decent, non-froufrou, non-outrageously expensive beach cover-up? I don't want one of those strapless things that I see advertised everywhere, I just want a cute, simple sundress that would be good for throwing on over my bathing suit. Why are these so hard to find? All the cover-ups I'm finding are made out of sheer, flower-print material, with long sleeves, and cost a fortune. I'm just going to my local pool, not the Bahamas. Thanks!
I would definitly recommend Athleta. Have not tried Lands End. I had the same issue with cover-ups (why do they sell long sleeve cover-ups?). Try Target. Found perfect, $14, lightweight. sleeveless cover-up.
I found a cute sundress cover up at Target. Spaghetti straps.

Just came back from Florida and found a cute Echo coverup for $14 at Bealls Outlet. Realize that is not helpful for here - but maybe Marshalls / Filenes will have similar ones for similar prices?
Suggested retail was $68 which I think is RIDICULOUS. |

Lands End usually as some easy and inexpensive cover ups: basically shirt dresses. If they are too shapeless, use a scarf or something as a sash. You might also luck out with a nightshirt type of thing.
They sell long sleeve coverups to shield you from the sun, or for when the breeze gets a little cool. I have two long sleeve cover ups (Target and Athleta) and I love them. |
I have loved every piece of clothing/swimwear from Althleta. Try their sale section. I got my tankini for $40!
OP here. Thank you for the recs!
lots of reviews online for athleta, btw. i find them to be honest and helpful.
Filene's Basement and Loehmann's had some nice cover ups last time I was in.
Bought 3 at Filenes Basement in Rockville on Saturday all ranging between $12.99 to $16.99. Including one that I just bought at L&T for $45! (that banging sound you hear is my head against the wall) !
Eddie Bauer has some nice cover ups last time I checked.
Believe it or not, JCPenney had a ton of simple cover-ups. And they were on sale when I was there for like $20. Cuter than you would think.
Land's End has nice quality bathing suits and cover ups. They have them at Sears now.
OP here. I received my Athleta order, and I have to say I'm not that happy with the board shorts I got. Maybe I got them too big? I ordered a large, and they feel loose, but I didn't want them to be tight and look like compression shorts or anything. But since they're loose, they just feel weird when they're wet. Oh well. I bought two, and wore one this weekend b/c I needed something for the pool, but I'm going to return one pair and maybe order a skirt instead. As for the cover up, I found a cute one at target for just $15, so thanks to whomever suggested that, and I ended up buying a really cute sundress at H&M which I didn't plan to buy as a coverup, but I realized that it's pretty see-through so I think the beach is the only appropriate place to wear it. Thanks to everyone for your advice.
I just ordered some bathing suits from Land's End and am really disappointed. I wanted something modest, but they are just plain frumpy- they didn't look that way in the catalog! They are going back. The Athleta suits that I have from previous seasons look so much better on me, style-wise.
