Golden Retriever Breeder?

Anonymous
Anybody have any recommendation for a reputable Golden Retriever breeder in the DMV/PA/NJ/NY area? I know it covers a lot of ground but we want to make sure we are getting a healthy, well tempered dog from a reputable breeder and are willing to travel. Thanks!

Have you contacted the breed club? They have a breeder referral.

OP here - I have however they DO NOT maintain a list of breeders who are breed club members, and therefore cannot provide you with a list of breeders. The club I reached out to did say they can provide me a litter list if they have it but at this time they don't have any litters within their members listing.

There's a list of approved breeders on the Golden Rescue organisation, Grreat.org's website for people looking for puppies.

HUH. There are several in the area where you are looking. The list is here: https://grca.org/about-grca/grca-clubs-map/ Potomac Valley for instance, has an email address specifically for this.

I found a breeder for a different breed through the website Gooddog.com. I liked that all communication and payment went through the site and the breeder also provided references. The dog I got is doing great and is a perfect fit for our family.

AKC certification is ridiculously easy to get and does nothing to guarantee the health of the breeding line, the care that goes into breeding, the prenatal care of the mother, or how the puppies are raised.

Especially if you're going to get a golden, which are extremely prone to cancer in the US given the inbreeding that's happened, you have to find a breeder that does all the genetic testing possible and has excellent documentation of breeding lines. You're setting yourself up for big money and big heartbreak otherwise. Tests aren't available for cancer susceptibility but any reputable golden breeder will be 100% upfront about the issue.

Also pet insurance is a must.

Same site, but different link from above: https://ofa.org/advanced-search/

You can enter the breeder's name in there to see if they do testing.
