I saw someone on another thread said camp hidden meadows in WV is having a Covid outbreak and taking a “don’t test so you’re not positive” approach. My kid is currently there Is there any truth to that? We’re supposed to see high risk grandparents the week after he returns and I would hate for them to have to cancel their trip…

| I mean i think no matter what is happening there is a risk your kid will catch covid while at sleep away camp and you should test frequently before seeing grandparents. |
| They haven’t communicated to parents that there is an outbreak? That’s pretty irresponsible. I know of two camps this summer that had significant outbreaks and they were great at keeping parents informed. |
| Have you called the camp and asked? Our overnight camp has very specific published procedures for in camp testing. |
What difference would it make, really? High risk kids aren't going to sleep away camp. |
For families like OP who will be visiting high risk people just after camp. |
| And for kids who have high risk parents at home who also deserve the ability to safely enjoy summer camp |
That's quite an assumption. My child's camp had high risk campers attending, but they took precautions that most of dcum would scoff at, including universal testing at drop off and every day the first 3 days, eating by cabin, and masking everywhere indoors and in large group settings outside. It worked: no covid and high risk kids could have a normal summer. That's what it means to be inclusive. |
| Why in the hell are you asking here instead of calling the camp directly? So odd. |
This!! |

OP: If they're not testing people, if I asked directly they would likely say they hadn't had any positive tests, right? Hence looking for anecdotes. We'll test before seeing family, but I'm curious how widespread it is.
FWIW, they did a rapid test on everyone at drop-off, although it seemed like the "check the box" type testing as opposed to the "we take covid very seriously" testing. No one supervised the swabbing, results read after less than 15 minutes, etc. |
| If you’re worried, go get your child and have them isolate until they visit with grandparents. It doesn’t matter if it’s one kid or 100 kids. If your child is exposed they may get it. |
The rapids I did always came back positive way before 15 minutes (as did pregnancy tests I took too). OP I feel like you want to be looking for trouble. You sent your child knowing that Covid was rampant right now. Take the steps you feel you need to do afterward and otherwise let it go. |
| It’s inevitable COVID will go around these camps, this strain is incredibly contagious. I would move the GP visit back a week and stop worrying. |
That's responsible behavior. Music camp? One of my kids is a musician, and I feel the music world is more reasonable than some other activities. |
