Club Volleyball - question about playing time in tournaments

Anonymous
I appreciate any insight as this is our first year in club volleyball.
My daughter made the lowest tier team in 14U at a top ranked club. We've had a couple tournaments and when there's three games played in a day, she's on the bench for 2 and a 1/2 of them.
We've signed up for extra lessons but wondering how much more we'll need to get good enough to earn more playtime in actual games? We're already spending $3.5k/year for the club team + an extra few hundred on additional lessons. She attends every practice, has a great attitude, and was one of the top two players on her middle school team.
So wondering what other's experience was with this.... (ie. did tournament playtime improve or did you need to switch teams/sports/etc.)

Volleyball playing time is determined by position and the rotation.

What is her position? How many girls are on the team?

She's a hitter. There's eleven girls on the team - there's five that are hitters - the two best girls play every game - my daughter and the other two rotate - so she gets maybe every third game (so far)

This isn't uncommon in any travel sport when tournaments are involved. Sorry, OP.

Ugh, sorry, OP. Based on comments from this board (and other parents in the past), we opted out of club volleyball because there was a real chance of such limited playing time, while traveling and paying lots of money.

Every club has their favorites, who play no matter how many mistakes they make. It’s a total mystery to me, our DD is grown and flown and played at college - I’ve seen it all - one time, at a big tournament, a kid hit 7 errors in a row and still stayed on the court. I stopped overthinking it a ago, suggest you try and do the same. As long as she loves the game.

We are having the same experience in
a regional travel team. I could have written this myself. I feel like it is a huge ripoff (ours was 2,500). Im extremely upset my dd hasn't been given a chance to play. And the coaches say parents cannot ask about playing time. We will never sign up again.

Club volleyball is a ruthless business. Different clubs have different priorities. I’ve seen kids sit on the bench for the entire season, which I thought was unnecessary and damaging. I know clubs are businesses but I wish they wouldn’t take kids to maximize revenues (which I have no doubt some do). A couple clubs have 15/16 kids on a roster, with returning players already entrenched in starting positions. What are the other 8/9 kids going to do all year? As a parent of a college player, I wouldn’t go near a club with a roster more than 12/13.

Is it the same with basketball? I have a DD interested in both but I am terrified we will pay to have her sit on the bench. is Basketball different?

Start a new thread. I am only familiar with boys basketball but YES my son an a few other kids sat on the bench a lot last year so the 2 coaches' boys could play almost the entire game. We found another team midseason (granting more game time) so our son played for 2 teams to finish out the season.

Thanks to all the replies above - she had a practice tonight which was a scrimmage against another team - benched entire time - thought practices were at least to be equal! But she still likes it and was cheering from the side…

+100. This would make me mad.

At this point, I would pull her and dispute the team fees on my credit card.
