Asperger's Spin Off

Anonymous
My DS (5) seems to have many of the signs of Aspergers (phenomenal memory, poor coordination/motor devel., tics). We already know he has SPD and he does OT. Anyway, we went to see Dr. Conlon in the Fall. He was great. His diagnosis was motor delays, but not Aspergers (which is what I expected to hear) because of the way DS engages with people (though with his peers it is a little iffy) and does not have any obsessions. I am just wondering whether other familes have dealt with this, i.e., expected to see a spectrum diagnosis, but did not get one. I just don't know what we are in for long-term.

My DS, 6, sounds very similar to yours. What did Dr. Conlon recommend?

OP here: Dr. Conlon recommended keep seeing OT. Because he did not see any additional diagnosis, he really didn't say much else. PP, How is your DS similar?

My DS also has an excellent memory and poor coordination. His diagnosis is SPD and ADHD. We do OT, but I don't see much improvement.

OP my DD8 is like this. Right now her primary diagnosis is anxiety and we are doing CBT for that. She is not diagnosed with Aspergers or ADHD but has some elements of both. Right now we are planning to do a social skills class for her in the fall. That is the area where she really struggles right now, especially as kids get older and less tolerant of other kids quirks.

We did OT when she was younger but honestly I feel like it was a waste of time and money.

PP, would you mind sharing who is doing the CBT with your child? Does it seem to be going well?

12:29 here. We are going to Instep in Falls Church. http://www.insteppc.com/ They have a wide range of services and social skills groups.

I do think that the CBT is helping her, but she has a very strong anxiety component and needs those coping skills. It is not helping so much with the social interactions which is why we want to do the social skills class. We are also considering a different school placement for her next year because our current school is not going well for her (socially, not academically).
