Am trying to start school visits earlier with my second kid, as we waited too long with my first. What are some possible schools for a kid with a 3.5 UW but all the hardest classes, 1550 SAT, decent extracurriculars but nothing outstanding. White male from McPS.
I know 3.5 is not considered very good from MCPS but not sure what types of schools would be realistic. Engineering is a possibility or other STEM—still not really sure. Thanks. |
Does he want a big or small school? Urban or rural? Close to home or far from home? |
And what kind of vibe is he looking for? If he could design his own peer group, what types of kids would be in it, and in what amounts? |
Why should anyone do that for you when that is what a college counselor is for? |
PA tour - Lafayette, Lehigh, Villanova, Pitt and Drexel.
CA - Santa Clara, San Jose State, UCSC, San Diego State, USD, LMU Upstate NY - University of Rochester, RPI, RIT NY area- NYU, Fordham, Stevens Institute Mass - U Mass Amherst, WPI, Wentworth, BU, NEU Midwest - Rose Hulman, Purdue, Wisconsin, Ohio, UIUC, Boulder, University of Denver |
VT |
Good grief. Why should you care if posters share ideas with OP? Go away. |
Why are you even on this message board? It’s a college forum and an appropriate place for parents to seek input and suggestions. Move along if this isn’t for you. Sheesh! |
Just because local schools are easy to tour, I would start there.
For engineering, I would visit UMBC and Catholic as well as UMD. |
In-state, OOS or both? |
3.5 GPA. Ouch. |
I’d focus on narrowing down preferences. Visit a large school and a small one. A city, suburban and more rural. A state u, SLAC, etc. once you know they type of school you’re looking for, that will help. |
UMBC |
I know some mcps kids in this GPA ballpark in at Virginia Tech for engineering. In state would be UMBC, UMD unlikely. Also try, UVM, UMass, WPI, RIT, RHIT. U Cincy,WVU/ODU for likely. Manhattan or York College for likely LAC with engineering. Maybe Lehigh as a reach. |
