Alternative to CYA for girls basketball

Anonymous
We've been extremely disappointed with CYA girls basketball. It's a mess and we need to find an alternative - we are in 20171, so not even in Chantilly. What are some better elementary and middle school basketball leagues nearby?

This is for recreational basketball, not travel or AAU, so I know that's part of the problem, but surely there are better run rec programs? It's not even the coaching that is bad, it's the way the league is run (like they've switched game times multiple times, there was one day where a game was scheduled but the school was closed, we didn't get a jersey until the 3rd game, still have not received basketballs, etc.).

Received basketballs? Free basketballs are not usually part of a rec basketball program.

All the rec leagues deal with the schools not unlocking the gyms when they are supposed to, it is frustrating for the volunteers who run the league as well. The game times switch when the schools close the gym abruptly (happens frequently).

Keep in mind these rec leagues are 100% run by volunteer parents giving up their free time to run a program for YOUR child.

a lot of parents sign up for these leagues with a consumer mindset, you are buying something from a private corporation. You are not. You are *joining* a community run league and have to pitch in and help. If you don't pitch in, you don't complain.

Maybe next season you could volunteer to be the person in charge of jersey distribution.

I agree with PPs—if you want to stay with rec leagues, and want better organization, then maybe you will need to step up.

how about FCA? I know they have other sports.

What is FCA?

Every rec league in Fairfax county has the same issue with gyms and scheduling. It is a known problem. The schools do not like community use and some are frankly downright hostile. The custodians don't show up or disappear without unlocking the gyms. The schools close for use at the last minute.

It’s funny many of us have volunteered to take things over but it seems these established leagues have old guard parents, some whose children haven’t even been involved for years, and they simply will not give up the roles. It’s weird and a disservice to the current kids playing that nothing ever changes , improvements or new idea are never allowed in. VYI has this problem.

I’ll pay double not to have to pitch in.

+1 from a non-basketball league, except I don't think we have a ton of volunteers. We just have old guard parents who haven't involved anyone else, perpetuating the consumer mindset, but then giving up because their kids are no longer impacted when they stop caring.

CYA in general is a terrible organization. I'd look to travel to Reston-Herndon for their orgs. But summer basketball in general is not as organized as winter.

Not an option. And that attitude is why the leagues suck. No one feels a moral obligation to pitch in and help run a *community* program that your kids are benefiting from.

Oh my god. I DO volunteer and it's an extremely poorly run program. I asked about alternatives. You are not answering the question. I guess all basketball programs suck or all mommies are just b*ches.
