Georgetown or Northwestern

I know both are always reaches, but DS has the stats to make both realistic if he applies correctly. He has a 1570 SAT/ 35 ACT and a 4.0 UW with the highest rigor at his selective private school. He is a four year varsity athlete and team captain with state ranking in one sport, a four year varsity player in another, president of business club, co-head of math club with 1st place state medal in his event (probability), Top 10% of his class, and has volunteering hours and a paid summer job.

DS would major in Econ and minor in Business at Northwestern (and would apply for the MMSS program) and would apply ED if he decides it's his first choice. At Georgetown he would apply to McDonough School of Business. He could apply REA or not (we understand it doesn't really confer a large advantage). For NU he has to decide if it's his first choice because their ED rate is around 20% but their RD rate is more like 7%, so deciding not to ED is statistically throwing away his chance at admission. He has to decide this summer and ED (or not) accordingly.

He has visited both and really liked both. He loved Georgetown/DC as a town, and he likes Evanston and the proximity to Chicago. Weather doesn't affect his decision - we are from the Midwest and it doesn't bother him. He thinks he wants to work in NYC in finance, but that could change so I want him to get a degree that opens lots of options. He wants sports teams he can root for and he also wanted Greek life. Does Georgetown have some sort of "unofficial" Greek life? Is NU's Greek life still active?

Would love thoughts from people who have recent experience with either college or whose DCs also were choosing between them. I wish he could apply to both and then decide, but it seems that if he wants NU it has to be by ED so he has to decide sooner.

Northwestern University's RD admit rate is probably below 5% as the overall admit rate (ED & RD combined) is about 7.5%.

Can one minor in business at Northwestern University as an undergraduate student ?

If Jewish, Georgetown.

Yet he really can't decide on a school? Really?

Northwestern has a more fun campus culture. Better facilities.

Why so mean? The mom is asking for information about campus life, Greek life, and the different majors from people who maybe looked at the same two schools. If you know something that will help the child decide, why not share it.

I believe Northwestern gave an admit rate of under 7% at the admitted student event last month.

My husband is an economist. He says NU has a solid economics department and good business school. He says if kid is serious about developing professional skills go to NU.

Maybe, maybe not.

Evanston is a very Jewish area, and prior to this week, Northwestern was a very supportive school for Jewish kids.

I would keep an eye on the lawsuit filed against the school from Jewish students, and also how the appeasement agreement with the protestors pans out, particularly as alumni donors make their voices heard against it.

I mean NW autocorrect strikes again.

Georgetown has an underground greek community but a lot of the social life is built around the clubs the kids participate in and the dorms.

Both schools are reaches and while' OP's kid has great stats, so too do about 300,000 other applicants all vying for the same schools.

Aren't those both complete lottery schools even with a 4.0/35? Those are my son's stats and we're not wasting this much time worrying about which is a better fit and for what reasons--the chances are so slim at either.

Hmm, I'm Jewish and I'd sooner send my kid to Northwestern. [shrug]

Yes they are. But NU is only even within shooting range if he ED’s. So he has to “waste time” deciding if it is a better fit because if he thinks Georgetown is better he shouldn’t ED Northwestern.

Also, he is legacy at both through me and my husband. So he has a realistic shot at both if he applies strategically. So he has to decide if he wants to ED.

Both schools are reach and career outcome is probably similar.

If the kid likes both, i think it's now about maximizing changes. I would go ED at Northwestern. GU EA is lower rate and you can't apply to other schools with binding decision.
