Got an email from cultural care stating this and they’d like to talk to strategize. What is the scoop? Are there a lot more host families than au pairs?
Anonymous
Interesting. I would think it could be the opposite - maybe a lot of families are not signing up due to the uncertainties around the new regulations/increased costs.

Op here…yes. I thought it would be easier. My calls at 2:30…will fill you all in

Are APs being less entitled b/c less families are willing to throw their life savings at them?

It's unique because once you match and pay the deposit, you realize you are on the hook for the new state department rules and $700/week.

Wait, what? Is that true? What agency are you using? They didn't tell you that in advance?

OP, what did your agency tell you on the call? Come back and tell us!

Fake news. Where do you get this sh**?!
The current proposal grandfathers contracts signed within 6 months AFTER new regulations take effect.

Op here… she said that there are more host families looking and you have to move fast and use whats ap as opposed to email. You need to be more aggressive with reaching out. Also expect more declines. But… looking at cultural care they seem to have much fewer au pairs than au pair in America. Maybe it’s more of an agency issue?

That’s a more reasonable pay rate.

They need you to match quickly so that the grandfathered six months of the new state department rules fall squarely within your host family contract.

Is there updated information about the new regulations? Have they been approved? Where is the info about this 6 month rule and when will the new regulations take effect?

The comment period on the new proposed State Dept rules only ended in Jan. State has not published any decisions and realistically, nobody expects any new rules to take effect before Jan 2025. That PP is just stirring the pot.

Interesting. Sadly, I think the program is coming to an end. I am glad we are on our last AP and will be done hosting after that. The program worked well for us, but there are bad actors on both sides.

The 6 month rule is in the proposed rules: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/10/30/2023-23650/exchange-visitor-program-au-pairs

the Department of State proposes to “grandfather” au pairs (and their host families) on exchange programs that began prior to the final rule's effective date, (

i.e.,

180 days from publication of the final rule). Such exchange programs will not be subject to the new rules for the duration of the initial one-year program, or for up to one year if the au pair is currently on an extension
