male or female au pair? RSS feed

Does anyone have experience with both? Anything you noticed or found relevant that you hadn't considered before the experience? Any preference now?

Former AP here.

I'd say it depends if you have daughters or sons ...

Males are more fun if you have a son or sons ...
Obviously it's boring for a female to play baseball etc

On a side note, they eat more than a female and it can be costly ... but it's also less drama

It has nothing to do with whether you have boys or girls. From what I've seen, male APs are great with energetic and/or athletic kids, while female APs are only good with that group if the family looks specifically for an athletic female AP.

I've had multiples of both. I also have two boys.

I agree that it is easier to get male APs to play soccer/baseball/basketball with my kids than the female APs.

That's about the main difference I've noticed. I can't generalize in terms of who is better at chores/cooking/anything like that. I also don't agree that the males necessarily eat more.

I try to screen out the drama-prone, so I can't really say on that front either.

I just started looking again and this time I'm not focusing on one gender or the other, but rather looking for a good fit with the family and an interest in child development on some level.

Would you have a male au pair with a 5 year old girl?

No. Male Au Pairs are better for boys. Interview some more females.

Given that the vast majority of APs are female, you really have to go out of your way to find a male AP, and I'm not sure why you would do this specifically for a 5 year old girl?

Our best au pair of 3 total was a male. Have 3 daughters and a son. He was engaged, super fun for kids, good driver.

I only know one make au pair and he’s gay.
Family has 2 boys and he’s extended with them. They love him. Drama free.

We had 2 males, 4 females.
We have 2 boys.

In our top AP of all time it would be the males and one South American female.

Males did eat more, hooked up with just about every female AP in a 50 mile radius.

We had more female APs at our house than when we had female APs because a lot of families have a no-male guests in the home rule.

Our males were German and awesome athletes.

Sure we would. Would you marry a man and have children with him?

Absolutely not. Odd that OP would even consider it when most of the AP’s are female. Why go out of your way to look for a male AP for a 5 y/o girl?

I personally wouldn’t hire a male aupair for a male or female child. Young males who are too eager to work with children doesn’t sit well with me

What’s the matter with y’all. Wake up. Why would you ever hire a dude AP over a female? Gtfo. Your kids deserve the most safety possible.
