Am I being paranoid? RSS feed

First time employer here looking for a full time nanny in the Seattle area and am here to vent my experience.

I found my "dream" nanny profile and I called her for an interview and everything went well.
But after that things started going downhill
-I asked her for her degree certifcate, other special needs certificate .She said they were all lost in the moves.
-I chose to let it go and asked her for more references as I could only get through to 2 references out of the 6 she sent(but they said very good things about her)
-Then on close scrutiny of her resume, her work exp barely added to 5 years while she has written that she has 12 years exp
-I informed her that I will be going ahead with a one month trial period but only after a full background check since it was a full time position.
I asked her but twice before ordering and she agreed for the check.I spent $89 ordering it from got it from enannysource. They sent a consent form for her to sign.
She misunderstood and refused to sign it saying she thinks they are going to do credit check.I clarified that it was not the case and the email and the website clearly mention that they do not run credit checks.
In spite of that, she refused because she is not used to" having such checks performed on her and "her life being looked at" and has accepted another position.

Was I doing something out of the ordinary and pissed off a good nanny?
The nanny website has very good reviews about her and references also were raving about her.

You dodged a bullet. I am sorry for the nightmare experience.

You definitely dodged a bullet. Be thankful!

You aren't being paranoid. This nanny clearly wasn't the right fit for you. Consider this a blessing and move on to someone who doesn't make you jump hurdles just to hire them. Good luck OP.

You aren't being paranoid. I agree w/ the others that you dodged a SERIOUS bullet. There were so many red flags there.

Only being able to produce 2 out of 6 references means to me that the other four were fake. If she were only able to give you 5 out of 6, I'd let one go. But not the MAJORITY.

You dodged a bullet. I have been background checked to death over the years.

Too many nannies look good on paper and many can manage to get past the first interview, but then the truth slowly starts coming out. And you are wise to do a trial period.

Hi OP, I'm a FT nanny here in Seattle - welcome to the forum! I think we're the only two

This nanny might have been completely fine and have a clean background but she doesn't sound professional in the slightest. You want someone who can cross their Ts and dot their Is and knows how this whole process works, because they're the nannies who will also understand how to do their jobs - from keeping your house tidy to building enriching outings for the kids and so on. You dodged a bullet here and definitely will be able to find a great nanny who readily provides references, background checks, and proof of education, CPR/First Aid certification, etc.

I'm a nanny in Portland and have NEVER had a background check run. I really don't think it's normal.

I think you may be the only one who doesn't think this is normal. I have had local, state, and federal background checks. I am fingerprinted in many databases. This has been required in all of my jobs. As a professional nanny, I would hope the interviewing parents would background check me. If they didn't, I would questions their judgement.

OP I wouldn't trust it. She's hiding something and looks can be deceiving. For your childs sake, DON'T hire her.

She's faking experience, degrees, etc most likely for a higher hourly wage. Who'se to say those 2 refrences aren't family or friends?

The fact that FOUR out of SIX didn't respond is also a red flag.

She doesn't want you to look into her background. Why?

This is your child. Leave no stone unturned. Kick her to the curb. NO trails, NOTHING!

The ones who haven't gotten background checks are probably working for cheap, neglectful parents. Or they're illegals, were found off of Craigslist, etc. Parents who actua
