Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo, conditioner and scalp treatment seem to soothe it and get it healthy. Healthy enough that after the most recent color & highlights, I didn't have any reaction.

Also, don't wash your hair the day before you color. Let your natural oils protect your scalp.

Agreed - I always color my hair when it's good and dirty. If you do it in the salon, ask them to rub a good conditioner into your scalp and through your hair after the color is rinsed. I do mine at home, but I always work that conditioner into my scalp and let it sit for a good 5-10 minutes. I never have a problem.

+1 I use Garnier at home, no problems.

Has this ever affected your color? My hair's been pretty dry recently so I started using organic coconut oil at night and it seems to have stripped my color completely.

I have been going to the salon for years to get my hair colored but the last few times 5 or 6 hours after the coloring my head starts itching. I talked to my hairdresser today and she said if it happened again she would took to the supplier of the hair color to see if they added something different. Last month I took Zyrtec and it helped. I guess I will be taking that tonight as well.

Day 5 and I am happy to report I am finally getting better. The swelling has reduced greatly and the pain in the lumps and my neck has eased up and the rash along my hairline is almost gone. I'm still itchy though. I am no longer using the T-Gel shampoo and the Scalpicin. I switched to Head and Shoulders with eucalyptus last night and it's working fine. I also stopped taking the ibuprofen and Benadryl this morning so we will see how that goes. Wish me luck!!!

Do not shampoo your hair the day of your color.

See if this helps.

I have used Clairol Balsam before. This just sprung up out of nowhere. I am still doing the treatments the Pharmacist suggested twice a day. The only problem is I can't take Benadryl while I'm working because it makes me sleepy so I get real itchy at work. UGH!!! Going into day 4 with all the same symptoms :/

I use organic coconut directly on scalp for a few days before and after dying. Apply prior to shampoo, put shampoo directly on scalp before wetting hair, scrub in. Water, scrub in more, rinse, conditioner.

PP, sorry this happened to you. It sounds miserable. FWIW, had you used Clairol Balsam Color before? I know allergies can develop suddenly, but I've never used that brand.

I colored my hair 2 days ago with Clairol Balsam Color 612 RB. Yesterday I woke up with extreme itching and a rash along my entire hairline. My eyes and face were also beginning to swell. By yesterday afternoon I had painful bumps all over my head. Some were swollen lumps and some were sores. I also had a severe headache. Then my neck began to hurt and I could hardly turn my head. Yesterday evening I went to Walgreens to see what I could do for some relief. First it was recommended that I take Benadryl so I got the Walgreens generic brand. Next I was told to wash my hair with T-Gel shampoo. I also purchased this in the Walgreens generic brand. Then it was suggested that I get some Scalpicin liquid and apply it to my scalp after towel drying. Again, I got the Walgreens brand. And lastly I was told to take ibuprofen. When I got home I immediately began this series of instructions. It stopped the itching and the pain and I was able to get some sleep. I am now going on day three and I still have all the same symptoms. I woke up this morning really itchy and burning and in pain and swollen. I had to repeat the whole process and now I feel ok again. I have colored my hair many many times and I have never had this happen before. It is a nightmare. Without the above products, I would go insane. For those of you that are experiencing this too, maybe this will help. On a side note, I will not be coloring my hair again for a LONG time if ever. I would rather be gray than this.

Anonymous wrote:Mine only itched when I did it at home, and then only when I went to bed that night. It was like the pressure of my head against the pillow aggravated the scalp, because it was only the part that I was lying on that itched.

I am glad to know that someone else experienced the same thing after sleeping on my newly colored hair. I woke up and the area where my head was on the pillow was itching like crazy.

Do not shampoo your hair prior to coloring it.

And run a strand test.
