I never paid attention, then a friend pointed it out at school.

I wouldn't do anything until you know his hand dominance or until a few months before kindergarten. I sent my boys to a play based preschool and neither kid could write their names or any letters/numbers except the "l" when they turned 5. My oldest in particular hated art/coloring/any fine motor skills. A few months before they went to kinder I bought little golf pencils from Handwriting Without Tears and a handwriting book. I worked with them for 5 to 10 minutes a day on writing his letters correctly (top to bottom, correct spacing on the line and between letters, start name with Cap other letters lower case, etc. I made then hold the pencil correctly and erased if they were sloppy so they developed good habits with one to one supervision in the few months before kinder. They both ended up with neat printing. One friend used to brag to me how her two year old could write letters. Her kid ended up with horrible handwriting and an odd pencil grip because she developed terrible habits that were quite ingrained by the time she started kinder.

Same here. It was mandatory for us to use bc we started to learn cursive.

Having said that, my DD learned it in 4 yr old preK by drawing and using broken crayons.

Seconding breaking the crayons down. They can only be used with correct grip that way. Works on my 18 month old.
