Jesus, this is easily one of the worst shows I've ever watched in my life. Nothing happens. All of the characters are insufferable. I don't know if I can stomach s2. Everything about s1 sucked. 3/10 stars.
Season 2 is amazing becauseā¦ it glorifies/rationalizes promiscuity and wealthy and hip millennials cheating on their spouses to fix their marriages. And the woman from parks and recs who is now like 40 years old is still so smart-mouthed and cruel all these years later! Peak television!
Do you two only watch tv/movies or read books where the characters are admirable and the goal of the story is to convince to be more like them? These people are not supposed to be role models or even sympathetic. The show is a commentary on how very wealthy people exist in the world today, how they interact with each other and with "the poors," how even with all their money and privilege, many of them struggle in fundamental ways with relationships and finding meaning in life. The creator, Mike White, spoke in an interview once how something he noticed about wealthy people as he became one of them is that they are often in a state of existential crisis because their money resolves all their other human needs and all that is left is existential. So the show often shows the staff and other "regular" people at these hotels dealing with the normal problems of making money, getting or keeping a job, etc., and much of the conflict of the show comes from how those workaday pursuits bump up against these obscenely wealthy people who never worry about that stuff but are instead in a state of constant mental crisis because their lives lack meaning and substance. The goal is not to make you like the characters or even root for them. It's cultural commentary.
This is excellent feedback, thank you for writing this. It's so puzzling when people are upset by "characters who aren't nice, no one to root for". Why does everyone have to be *nice* and relatable? Sometimes viewers need to just sit back and observe. Seeing fictional characters behaving poorly on-screen and enjoying the acting and writing doesn't mean you are cosigning their behavior.
+ 1 to both of you.
+100
