I like Laurel. But the only Laurel I knew had a difficult time always correcting people when she introduced herself. Sounds so much like Laura. But maybe kids aren't named Laura anymore, so it wouldn't matter. I have a similar name (sounds like a popular name, but isn't), and not only do I often have to correct people when they think my name is "Laura," but people often remember it wrong, so people who I am positive KNOW my name, will later call me "Laura." Then I have to correct them all over again. It sometimes feeds into my social insecurities, makes me feel like I'm so insignificant that people don't bother to remember my name correctly.
Eh, I am a Shannon and people I just meet constantly say Sharon. It doesn't bother me all that much. No, not a lot of little American Laura's, although nameberry claims it has become a popular name in several other countries. It means Laurel, though. Weird. Anyways, I'm rooting for Laurel mostly because I can't get it past my husband (he won't give me a reason why) and I think it is a lovely name that has been used on two shows I have watched recently (The Lying Game and Arrow).
