My son wanted sports equipment, beyblade stuff and science kits. If in doubt, email the parents.
OP here. In the past, if I ask my brother, he says he has to think about it and takes forever and then I have to nag him, and I feel like I can't get it off my plate (can't pull the trigger on a gift). And if I have an idea, and run a potential gift by him--same--he has to think about it. (My SIL is a nut job and I can't ask her) I suspect the hold up is that he runs everything by my SIL. So I just want to get my nephew something--get your ideas and just pull the trigger.
Wow, in that case I'd suggest $$ because my son always loves money (a small amount like $10 -- one for every year or maybe $11 for one to grow on). However, if SIL would react negatively, do what DH and I used to do with high maintenance relatives: give a book and a gift depending on the kid's favorite hobby, like a book on the solar system and a solar system kit or a book on soccer and a soccer ball. Good luck.
