Classes, Workshops, Camps, and Playgroups
| My 4 year old DD would really like to take ballet but I don't think she's a future dancer. At the four year old level, how serious is MYB? I'm not looking for anything too serious or a class with a bunch of super talented kids. I think she would really like Ballet Petite but it's so expensive. |
| IIRC at age 4, MYB offers creative movement (aka "pre-ballet")-- I think it's mostly dancing around with scarves and things, nothing too serious. Things get more "serious" (in terms of what sort of behavior is expected from the kids-- not necessarily in terms of kids being super-talented) in Ballet 1. We did an intro to ballet class (that I think falls in between those 2 classes) and I liked MYB a lot but my kid decided against continuing. |
| I'm going to sign my daughter up for a Creative Movement class from the Recreation Department. My MIL has been taking Ballet for years and went with my neice to a class at Ballet Petite (years ago) and has greatly discouraged me from signing my daughter up there. I don't know why, but she didn't think it was worthwhile, particuarly considering the cost. I have no opinion personally, as I've never been there! |

The preballet is fine...no biggy in the first few years.
But, this school trains children to become professionals. If she continues there beyond the beginning levels she may end up with a harsh dose of reality (you don't have the right body type, not good enough, etc.) or she could become an amazing ballerina. They tell it like it is.... |

DS did MYB Creative Dance when he was 4 last year during the summer. He was the only boy in his small weekday class and loved it - told me he liked dancing with the pretty girls... The ballet techniques taught were very basic, and the teacher was warmly appreciative of any effort displayed by the children. She used pretend play to make them dance around with scarves and for the last class invited the parents to come in and watch the children dance a coordinated display that was just so cute!
I have heard unsatisfactory reviews for Ballet Petite, on the other hand. |
| Check out your local rec. dept at this age. Classes are good introductions and far less pricey. Also look into Joy of Motion or another local place. Less pricey than Ballet Petite. Where are you located? My daughter dances and I know of some area places. |
