My kid is interested in programs (Education, Social Work) that are offered at Bowie State and University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Both of these schools are considered as HBCU.
Would it be weird if they decided to go to these schools? We are in PGCPS so they are used to being in a majority minority setting. They are a fairly good student (GPA 3.8) take honors and AP classes but generally don't do well on standardized tests so I'm not sure that they would get into UMD right out of high school. They want to stay in-state. |
But why? |
Not weird at all. I know more than 1 white person who attended a HBCU because that was the school they wanted to attend. |
Bowie State has lots of non-Black students. If your kid wants to go, they should go. |
I haven’t looked at those schools but I looked at Howard’s stats yesterday (just by chance; my kid is a junior so I’m dipping into the hunt a little) and there is a not-insignificant number of white students attending. It’s easy enough to check the stats and then visit. Though I wouldn’t write off UMD, either. |
Look for a school with social work as an undergrad as they can sometimes save time on their masters. Do umbc for social work. |
Or salsbury |
So, I am having trouble finding Howard's undergraduate statistics, which I think are going to skew less white than their graduate school statistics. Like OP, my white child is essentially always in global majority settings, but I wouldn't encourage them to apply to Howard/Morehouse/Spellman/etc because I think there's a fair amount of "finding oneself" that happens in the undergraduate years, and that's going to be harder on all sides in a school that centers the Black experience for Black kids who may be in their first non-PWI space. |
Some HBCUs are majority white. |
That's the plan if they decide that they want to going into social work. |
Depending on the major, Salisbury is a good school. |
I think Bowie state would be easier than Howard. |
My cousin got a scholarship to attend an HBCU, he's white. He loved the experience. |
I also have a (white) family member that got a scholarship to a HBCU. |
My daughter is looking at pro pilot which is at UMES. Financially she needs to look at an in state option and UMES is the only school in MD that offers pro pilot. I've been wondering how a white student would do socially at an HBCU so I'm glad OP asked this question. |
