TTC #2 - massage/acupuncture - does it work?

Anonymous
Been TTC #2 for about 6 months with one chemical pregnancy in March. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia earlier this year, although have some doubts about the diagnosis. Although even if I don't have this specific condition, I do have some type of chronic pain issue which includes pelvic pain. Medical tests are all clear though so doctor doesn't feel like this is an issue for fertility...but perhaps there are some stress issues associated with it. I think before I see an RE, I'm kind of interested in trying acupunture, massage, etc. Anyone had success with this without other medical interventions? Any suggestions in the NoVa area of who to see?

TIA.

I'm a big fan of Dr. Arthur Fan in Vienna/McLean/Tysons. He does a lot of work with NIH, is very skilled with TTC issues, and is a lovely person.

FWIW, we conceived DC#1 after I did a month of accupuncture and herbs with Dr. Fan. It's been slower going this time around for DC#2, but I'm still hopeful.

I can't say yet if acupuncture will be successful in helping us conceive but I've been doing it for 6 weeks and have seen immediate results. Before going to my acupuncturist my cycles were about 60+ days long. The day after my first appointment I started spotting even though it was only day 34 of my cycle. By the second appointment I had my period, 20 days earlier than it had been since going off bc 8 mo before. Now I'm on day 31 of my first full cycle since I started acupuncture and I already have my period. It's a small step, but it shows me that the acupuncture is definitely doing something. I should also mention I am on a chinese herbal regimen. I'm seeing Yun Brown in Silver Spring, probably too far for you, but if anyone else is in MD and looking for an acupuncturist, I really like her.

I see Kerri Westhauser in Falls Church. TTC now for 3 months and I can't say if it works yet, but I feel better and less anxious. I am very happy with Kerri. She explains everything to me and has helped me change my diet to be more supportive for fertility. I used to get monthly migraines and haven't had them since I've seen her. Worth a shot! She is at 703-231-3930.

I believe for those who have a male factor, no matter how much acupuncture sessions you go through, it won't work. I started acupuncture initially in January 2009, a month later I got my positive pregnancy test (I believe it was a coincidence), then a month later miscarried (I did acupuncture while I was pregnant too). Then I started going to acupuncture again for the whole year (went through three acupuncturists including Kerri Westhauser (a really nice lady) and Arthur Fan and no results). My husband has motility and morphology issues and he saw Arthur Fan too. We did his sperm test after three months of acupuncture and no significant improvements. So, if you have a male factor, I don't think acupuncture will help much. Kerri Westhauser told me that Chinese medicine methods cannot improve sperm quality. But of course, if you are seeking relaxation, acupuncture and massage help a great deal for you to relax and deal with TT issues. Good luck!

I read some scientific study reports in Chinese, Chinese herbs do help fertility. Some herbs, like Gou Qi Berry, help the male sperm quality. If using herb formula, better.

it is pity, there are very few doctor trained in Chinese herbology. Most of acupuncturists here may be only got acupuncture training.

Looking for a doctor who had a more training is a good idea.

Have you ever consulted Dr. Arthur Fan? his teacher is famous in Chinese medicine.

His website: www.chinesemedicinedoctor.us, his blog is www.arthuryinfan.wordpress.com.

I strongly support him. He is a good acupuncturist and a doctor in Chinese medicine.

I just want to give my random story about Mayan massage - about 6 months ago, when TTC (still trying) I found an article on this technique in some granola magazine. I tried it on myself and all I got was immediate discomfort and then a UTI a day later I laughed at myself and moved on. Not to say Mayan massage might not work for some!

10:06 poster -- for clarification, I think it's Mayan womb massage.

Poster 23:42 I just wanted to second your experience with Yun Brown. I have been seeing her for two months and am ovulating on cycle day 14 instead of 22-24. Very happy with her. And she is very affordable and takes almost all insurances.
