Our kid got into language immersion for 1st grade. We applied for both the french and spanish lotteries, because we didn't really care which one DC did first (DH and I both speak both languages, we'd be thrilled for DC to be multilingual at some point). DC drew a high number for one and a low number for the other, and got in over the summer.
DC is probably an exception. Probably fewer families apply for 1st than for K, but then you are also looking at fewer open slots, which are due to attrition (families moving, kids being too stressed out by the immersion).
