DD getting wisdom teeth removed--please help!!

Anonymous
We recently found out that my 15 y.o. DD has 4 impacted wisdom teeth that need to be surgically removed.
She has a very low pain threshold and I am just trying to figure out exactly how bad this will be for her.
She will be sedated with fentanyl, propofal, and versed in a dentist's office! This alone scares the c**p out of me!
If anyone has been through this procedure and could offer helpful hints about what to expect, this scared-to-death mom would greatly appreciate it!
And yes, I am hiding my fears and anxieties from my child, but I think getting more informed will help calm me down.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me!

I got my wisdom teeth out when I was in my early 20's. Everyone responds to the medication differently.

When my dad got his out (in his mid 40's I think), the anesthesia made him so groggy he didn't even know where he was. He only remembers waking up several hours later on the couch at home. His face was also swollen for a couple of days.

When I got mine out, the anesthesia didn't make me groggy (when I woke up) at all. The nurses were all crowded around me to make sure I could walk and wouldn't fall over....and I was totally fine. Walked out to the car, my dad drove me home, and I walked upstairs with no issues whatsoever. I took the pain medicine they gave me when I was supposed to (Oxycodone I think) but my teeth never hurt me. The stitches bothered me a little, so I had the Dr. remove them even though they were the type that will disappear on their own over time.

The one thing I was VERY strict on was food. I had soup, baby food, mashed potatoes, and smoothies for a while. Even after the day had passed when I could begin eating soft pasta and things like that, I still waited a few more days.
My biggest reason for following the food rules so strictly was because I was terrified of getting a dry socket. (Don't want to scare you. A friend of mine said she got them because she was chewing gum too soon, and she said they hurt.)

Just makes sure she rests plenty when she is home. Keep her hydrated. Read the information the doctor gives you.

Agree with 12:42. I know it's different for everyone, but I didn't find it that bad. I had mine out in my mid 20s. Anesthesia was a little scary - just because the loss of consciousness is involuntary - but I suffered no ill effects and certainly wasn't groggy; I woke up a bit early to hear the doctor yelling at the resident who performed the surgery (until she realized I was awake). I didn't even take the pain meds they gave me, just tylenol. My teeth hurt and my cheeks were a little swollen, but no worse than when I'd had braces. Like PP, I was really careful to eat only liquids and soft foods because of my terror of dry socket. I think I subsisted on rice pudding for 2 weeks. (Which was quite good, really.) The most annoying part for me was that the stitches took *forever* to fall out. In fact, I called the doctor's office three or four times about it. They finally fell out on the very last day in the range the doctor had predicted.

I had my 4 severly impacted wisdom teeth out when I was 19. I was a little groggy post-surgery, and my cheeks were swollen and slightly bruised around my mouth (where they'd stretched to get it open wide enough to get inside and break the teeth to get them out) for a few days afterward. I recall spending the first few days after surgery taking a pain pill (I think it was percocet), sleeping for a few hours, eating a frosty from Wendy's, watching bad daytime television, taking another pill, and going back to sleep. I don't remember it being unbearable or even significantly uncomfortable.

OP here--thank-you guys so much, I am feeling better about this already!

OP I had all 4 removed plus 2 molars since my mouth was "too small" for all those teeth.
I didn't feel a thing and with the OTC meds and 24 hours of rest I was ready to rock n roll.
There was no food restriction for me and I removed the stiches myself. My mom almost colapsed when she entered my room and saw me with the scisors inside my mouth LOL

I had 4 wisdom teeth out when I was 19. I was terrified because DH (boyfriend at the time) had a bad experience but mine was fine. They gave me an IV so I was out before they even shot me with Novocaine and I never knew anything happened. I woke up and I was groggy and disoriented and in (minor) pain for about 10 minutes - they wanted me awake enough to walk to the recovery room down the hall before they would give me anything. Once they did, I was completely fine. Within 24 hours I was just taking Advil - I didn't need the prescription painkillers. Within 48 hours I was off everything.

Ice on her jaw the day after surgery, 15 minutes on, 15 off. It really really helps. Also, I got dry sockets because I did not properly clean my mouth after eating. They hurt waaaaay more than the surgery. She should rinse with salt water after eating and you should ask about a rinsing syringe...

the first day hurts, but after that - nothing....

Oh I forgot about the rinsing syringe! I used that thing ALL the time.

I hate mine taken out when I was 19 (late 80's). Two were pulled but two had to be cut out. They gave me something that made me loopy - but I was awake. It was actually a really cool feeling. I remember seeing the Dr's hands coming towards my mouth - they seemed like they were HUGE. I vaguely remember my dad getting me to my car and driving me home. I was out of it for that afternoon. I remember throwing up blood (some had gone down my throat) but it didn't bother me as much - because I was still loopy. My mouth was sore for some days after - but it was tolerable. The most annoying thing was that for a couple of months there was an indent where they had taken out the teeth on the bottom gums and food would get stuck. I remember having to stand under the shower and let the water pressure get it out. They didn't give me any kind of rinse and I was too stupid to ask my mom for suggestions.

All in all though - it really wasn't too bad of an experience. Once the drugs wore off there was a bit of an ache - but again, it was tolerable. I just was careful about what I ate for a couple of days.

My 15 y.o. DS had his removed a few months ago -- local anaesthesia, plus his iPod; here's what worked for us --
1) plenty of ice;
2) all the ice cream he could eat.
He was in a fair amount of pain on Days 2 and 3, better on Day 4 and back to normal on Day 5.

Had all 4 removed in my mid-20s. One dry socket and there's no pain quite like that. Make sure your daughter hears from the dentist what causes those (sucking too hard, eating certain foods) so she's careful to avoid doing those.

Never had mine out , nor did my 2 siblings. I'm now 40. It's a common dental scam. Unless they are infected they do not need to be removed. Nowadays they remove everyones for no reason. Mine never came thru--some just don't. I'd have many ?s before I took the dentists word that they really needed to be removed.

Completely disagree. Mine were coming in crooked and they NEEDED to be taken out. They were pushing my other teeth together. Are you a dentist? Didn't think so.

I'm calling BS on you! WT are major cause of complications and if one is having ortho work done it's better to remove it before they come in and mess up the hard work of years of brace wearing.

I hate when ppl talk about what they don't know!
