Surgical removal of an IUD

Anonymous
I went to get my IUD removed today and the doctor could not find the strings. Now I have to go for an ultrasound to locate it and have it surgically removed. Has anyone else been through this? How was the process? How was the recovery?

Can I ask at what point you had it inserted? My OB at RHJ said that the Mirena in particular is approved for six weeks after delivery BUT that she never does this and recommends waiting until 12 weeks because your problem has come up so often. I hope everything goes well.

Hello, I just recently got my IUD removed. I have known since my first yearly checkup that my strings were not viewable to the doctor, so for the past three years I have gotten an ultrasound to verify that the iud was in the proper location. I was really nervous about getting it removed because I expected to go the surgical route. My doctor had to do a lot of searching and "poking around" but she did find the strings. I am letting you know this because once you have the ultrasound, hopefully the doctor will have a better idea of where to look for the strings. It wasn't painful but rather uncomfortable. Good luck.

OP here. Thanks for the response - I had the ultrasound today and it is where it is supposed to be so I am hopeful about avoiding surgery!

I had it put in at 12 weeks pp and have had it for 2.5 years.

I just went to the doctor's because I was having pain and the doctor did an internal and couldn't find the strings. I have only had mine in for a year, so I won't have to worry about it until I want it out, however I am a bit nervous about it. I did have an ultrasound and the doctor said now that he knew it was in the right place he may be able to be a little more aggressive when looking for it, however there is chance I will have to go under general anesthesia to have it removed... WTF! I am glad to hear a PP's doctor was able to find it. There is hope!

I also had it put in at 12 weeks pp and had it for 2.5 years. The strings "disappeared" within a few months, as I recall. When they took it out, they used a special tool (horrible name but not scary in reality -- "IUD hook"). I think it took a few minutes longer than it would have otherwise and they had the guy in the practice who "was good at this" do it. It was not a big deal from my perspective (to the extent that I've now had another one put in, after having a baby). Be sure you explain your situation clearly when you make the appt to have it removed -- I would verify that they have the "hook" in the office and you'll be seeing someone who has experience. Good luck!

It seems like a common problem. The strings of my IUD could never be found and I have had it for over 9 years (with several U/S to make sure it is still there). It is due to be removed and replaced this year and your post made me nervous. I have never been under general and don't want to go under just to remove a stupid IUD!!!

I'm not thrilled to have to go for surgery. It's made me reconsider another IUD being put back in. I broke up with the bf anyways and ok with getting my body back to normal. The last year ( year 4 with it in) began the weight gain, hair loss and moodiness. Feels like I'm pregnant especially with the brain fog. ?? I was never aware of all that prior.

My strings are woven into my cervix. They have never seen anything like it! Yuck! I have to have the ultrasounds to find the IUD and then surgery to get the strings out and hopefully the Mirena.

I am freaking out!

Make your husbands get snipped! You pt up with pregnancy and child birth and breastfeeding. They can do one little outpatient so you can avoid this crap.

+1

Plus I highly doubt anyone needs general for an IUD removal; I'm sure some nice sedation will work just fine!
