What do you store leftover food in? follow up on chemicals/ autism thread

Anonymous
Following up on the autism/ chemical thread, I'm trying to rethink how I do a lot of things (wearing make-up isn't going to stop, but it's just me I'm affecting at this point...). I don't microwave in plastic but am thinking that even putting food in there while still warm could make the food absorb whatever bad things are in there. Should I switch to all glass? (there goes the unlocked plastic-container drawer for the kids!). What do you all do?
And I should probably switch to phalate-free shampoo and conditioner for myself (kids already use it). Are there any adult options besides using kids shampoos that you like?
Small steps I suppose!

Thanks.

Those glass Pyrex or similar containers. They do have a plastic lid, typically, but I don't let the food touch it and I don't put that lid in the dishwasher.

I switched everything out about 2 years ago.

Also, for sending food items with my son to school (where glass/pyrex would be too heavy), we use stainless steel containers sold in the camping section of places like Target. The best selection is at REI, LLBean, or various eco online stores.

Pyrex is fine, and the Container Store has lots of good choices for smaller glass dishes with lids.

On the plastics front, polypropylene (on the bottom it will say "pp" and/or "5") is thought to be safe, although we would never put them in the microwave. We send the kids' lunch foods in those little pp tubs you can buy at any grocery store. We use a stainless steel thermos for hot foods. The larger pp tubs are fine for storing leftovers. We handwash all pp containers.

I bought these recently at Costco and LOVE them. $35 or so for the set.

I am phasing out plastic altogether, a little at a time.

Just switched to those glass containers with the plastic lid. Like a pp, I don't let the food touch the lid. I just bought to big boxed sets of them at Costco. Each set had 9 containers/lids of various sizes for $20 or $25. Can't remember the exact price but thought it was a good deal.

I got glass containers with glass lid at Crate adn Barrel. I don't like the plastic lids b/c they shrink and get warped in the microwave.

Thanks for the links to the Pyrex and Snapware.

What do you all put on top instead of the plastic lid when microwaving? Saran wrap? But that's plastic, too. Maybe a paper towel?

You can buy a big cover that sits over everything that's made for microwaves, kind of a splatterguard. It doesn't touch the food, just keeps it from exploding into your microwave.

I just put a regular plate over the dish I'm microwaving in. I've also seen those big silicone covers.

Pyrex. I was recently at Homegoods and they had some great ones for less than the pyrex ones that I see linked here. Also I like to buy mostly square and rectanglar ones since they take up less space when you are limited with freezer/fridge space. I also made my own baby food and the little 2oz containers that I bought than, I now use for storing small portions of things or sending my child in to school with raisins, goldfish or the likes. I have had no problems with the lids shrinking and I have mine for 3 or 4 years now.

I didn't know you can't microwave in plastic. Oops! Been using a #5 take and Toss to heat up morning oatmeal for DS since he started oatmeal 2 months ago. How did I miss this?

I thought the same thing - I've got good ol' Rubbermaid containers, plastic bottles I pump breast milk into from DD#1 and DD#2 (three years ago), and sandwich bags I bought at the Dollar Store. Is my family going to die???

I did stop spraying DDT on my veggie garden though
