Sidwell football article in post....what are the parents saying?

Why do we want Sidwell to be good at footbaball? Or for that matter, have a team at all? I think they've lost their way.

Gonzaga is a great school. As a parent at Sidwell, I gladly concede your football team is better. I did not send my kid to high school because of its sports. I'm glad the high school football team is successful at Sidwell but I was thinking more in the long term when I signed to school contract.

This reminds me too much of the "feigned interest" many colleges have, including my alma mater, to be tops in sports whilst acting indifferent about it. Go or don't go. To the extent a university has a great academic reputation to bargain with, and then bargains 10% of the undergrad population away to varsity NCAA sports as does Duke (or 12% as does Notre Dame), those same institutions cheapen out. You can't have it both ways. If there are 3-4 kids at Sidwell who are passported in for football, I don't see that as best but do see it as acceptable in the name of diversity. 35-45 kids in the school for football, baseball and lacrosse at a prep with an enrollment under 1,000 just plays into being all about sports, but trying to fake it well enough to pretend otherwise. The important thing is to face it for what it really is. Over time I felt a lot worse about my Duke degree on the wall knowing he trend went far beyond the trade-offs permitted for 15 basketball players who needed every boost to get in and remain. Now it has viraled out to high counts in other sports, and it is time to say "no, we need student athletes who belong here...not just knuckleheads who can play our programs up". Nobody at Sidwell is writing a bigger check to the school because of a football win, and that is a good thing. Some Duke grads write bigger checks after basketball championships, but none do for wins in other sports...which explains a bad thing to an extent.

And nobody is going to Sidwell because they want to play on the team. Pure student athletes through and through.

It really seems like Sidwell has made an emphasis to elevate their football program which is great to see.

I would love to see Sidwell play some IAC schools next Fall (St. Albans, Landon, Stephens, Bullis etc.) and see how they do.

Congrats to the Sidwell community and their players, especially the seniors for sticking it through the end (I recall 4 years ago, Sidwell's football program was nearly non existent) and deserve a lot of credit.

LOL. Nobody on Sidwell's team could start for Gonzaga? You have been watching too many violin recitals. Also, if Sidwell play any of the IAC teams (except perhaps STA), they would get a beat down. What a joke of a post.

Haters gonna hate.

Pretty sure their QB is going to play in the Ivy League. They have a defensive end going to Columbia and a wide receiver who is a junior who has 1-AA offers .

So what? The team is putrid.

Jesus, give it up. No one is claiming it is a regional powerhouse.

A number of Sidwell students get recruited every year for Div I and Div III college sports, despite the fact that Sidwell is not considered an athletic powerhouse.

The wcac dads who post on this site, more or less a Gonzaga dads, are super sensitive.

No one can be better than gonzaga in sports or academics.

Why can't you just be happy that a program who about 5 years ago was terrible has now one the lower tier DC state title. No one is saying Sidwell would be even close to gonzaga in a game. The schools have two entirely different missions, different size enrollments and academic standards.

There are kids on Sidwells varsity football team your head coach tried to recruit to gonzaga but the parents decided to go the academic route.

1. "now one the lower tier". Really? Guess you didn't graduate from SF

2. LOL. Nobody on the SF team was recruited by any legitimate football program in this area.

3. The team is still terrible.
