The album(s) has been growing on me as well...no song stood out to me immediately but now, several days in, there are at least a dozen that I'm enjoying, especially their bridges (The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys, But Daddy I Love Him, Down Bad, Fortnight)! |
She broke up because he’s a drug addict. |
Did you actually listen to her new album? The relationship didn’t end because of her choice. He is the one who broke up, but she is still down bad for him. The drugs are in the past. We all have mistakes in our past, don’t we? |
Some of you need to stop trying to make Matty happen. She specifically said she wrote this during a dark and difficult time and it helped her move on. She has closed the door. Much like many people write in a journal or diary, she writes music. The fact that it is released well after she originally wrote it doesn’t mean she still feels that way. |
I like that there’s more about Matty than Joe. |

Read her "summation"
I guess you can't really understand what happened if you've never been in the kind of relationship that she had with Joe, where you feel trapped and that you have to diminish yourself for the sake of the relationship. Once she got out and was free, the feeling was intoxicating. (It's like in the Wizard of Oz, going from black & white to technicolor). And then Matty love bombed her, took advantage of her vulnerability. I did the same thing years ago. Matty might have done her a favor by running away so quickly, before more damage was done. |
Obsessing over "Robin." She writes about children and childhood so well. If she wants a child, I hope it happens for her! |
Did YOU listen to the album? She is no longer “down bad”. That was the point of the album. Door shut. “And I don't even want you back, I just want to know If rusting my sparkling summer was the goal And I don't miss what we had, but could someone give A message to the smallest man who ever lived?” |

More like the Tortured Posting Department |
Joe was so guarded and private but he would not be well-known at all if it weren’t for her; he certainly wouldn’t have won a Grammy. She made him a household name (maybe he didn’t want that?). It would be ridiculous if he feels betrayed or disappointed by these songs, as has been reported. I hope that’s all BS. |
I am starting to think that Joe and Travis were PR on her behalf and she has been using them to cover up for the one man she has been in love with for a decade or more. It’s possible they even knew and went along with it because as you said about Joe in particular, the PR benefitted him a lot too. It is unlikely he listened to songs about illicit affairs and secret pining while they were together and didn’t put two and two together. Death By A Thousand Cuts is my favorite song on the Lover album, and I have always wondered about those lyrics. Wasn’t Lover the Joe album and at the peak of their bliss? Yet in that song she says she gets drunk (“functioning alcoholic” vibes) but it’s not enough because as soon as she sobers up, she remembers he is not her baby!?! Then she sings how she looks through the windows of their love even though they’ve *boarded them up*. Prologue of TTPD says this chapter is now closed and “boarded up.” But is it? Same for Travis. No way you listen to TTPD and think to yourself, that’s cool, she was over this decade-long epic love when we got together *a couple* of months after they broke it off, against her wishes. |
