Annapolis area schools?

Anonymous
Hi any of you out there with Anne Arundel experience - we are thinking of moving from DC to Annapolis. We don't make enough to send our kid to private school, so are looking at neighborhoods that feed into good elementary schools. Not so concerned about high school yet, as we may move again. So any thoughts or feedback on Annapolis area public elementary schools and/or the neighborhoods they are linked to? TIA!

Hi there! Unfortunately, Annapolis schools are urban city schools and come with the problems associated with that label. I'm a former AAC teacher (current SAHM). There are no decent elementary schools in Annapolis proper. The best schools are in Crofton, Severna Park, and Arnold. I'm being honest here, AAC schools outside of those 3 small areas aren't great.

I agree with above poster, Hillsmere is a good school, so is West Annapolis Elementary and Rolling Knolls Elementary and if need be Germantown Elementary and Eastport Elementary(urban school problems but with great and involved parent body.) Also, Davidsonville Elementary is decent. Keep in mind though that private schools in Annapolis are much cheaper than DC privates so if you are paying DC prices for daycare now then you can definitely afford Annap private school tuition. Look at St. Andrews Methodist Day School, St. Martin's Lutheran School, and St. Mary's Elementary also, Annap Area Christian School, all are under 15k.

Back to Hillsmere, look at neighborhoods that are off of Arundel on the Bay Road, Hunt Meadow, Hillsmere Shores. For Germantown, look at neighborhoods that are over by the stadium. Obviously for Eastport Elementary look in Eastport for housing.

The city of Annapolis has some great neighborhoods but most are bordered by lower income or non-English speaking populations and that's why the schools have some issues.

The city of Annapolis also has the highest ratio of subsidized housing in the nation.

Although I am not the OP, I could easily have written the same posting! Does anyone have any comments about Edgewater Elementary or Mayo Elementary? I don't think we can afford Arnold...Thanks!

Have you looked up in Crofton area? Or even up rt. 97 towards Severn and some parts of Severna Park, going up toward Kinder Farm Park. I believe Edgewater Ele is over crowded but no doubt a decent school. Don't know anything about Mayo.

West Annapolis Elementary is like a private school and one of the best in the county!

I would take Eastport off your list- it has lots of problems. West Annapolis is a great school but the middle and high school are not good.

And, the only private schools I would consider in Annapolis proper would be st. mary's or key- the other ones mentioned are so-so. Severna Park and Arnold have great schools!

I disagree with the pp, St. Mary's is not a good school at all, very large class sizes, discipline issues, drug issues, teachers not that strong.

Key is definitely the top school but St. Anne's is also very strong.

One of the key problems with Annapolis schools is the lack of diversity. The publics are mostly low income minority students and the privates are mostly upper income non minority students.
