As someone who made hiring decisions based on affirmative action - some applicants would have made it anyway and others were hired because we were looking to have more diversity - what I can say categorically is that one of the downsides of AA is that it casts a shadow on the minorities who are hired irrespective of whether they actually received preference.
The end result is that they all end up being painted with this broad brush of being given preferential treatment whether that is true or not. Did the Obamas get into the prestigious schools they attended because of their race? We really have no idea one way or the other. I can tell you that my grandson who is bi-racial would not have got into the school he is attending if he had been white. I fully supported his decision to use his minority status to give him an edge but why should anyone be surprised if down the line he is viewed as someone who got in because of his race? The unfortunate thing is that even if he had received admission purely on merit, he'd still be viewed by some as being a product of affirmative action. |
Well just encourage your grandson not to go around bragging about how big his hands are and grabbing women by the pussy whenever he feels like it. That's a little too narcissistic don't you think? |
Sanders has a strong vocabulary? He basically says the same 10 things all the time, the same way. -- someone who voted for him in the primary |
Cameron is nowhere near being the worst prime minister in UK history - not even in the past 100 years. Blair is totally despised today as was Thatcher when she was forced out. Let us not forget Anthony Eden and Neville Chamberlain. |
I would love to know what objective measure was used to arrive at these ratings given that most public speeches are the result of the handiwork or speech writers. |
Repetition is key. |
true... I think Reagan had good speech writers. But, if you ever seen Obama's townhalls, though, he speaks without a prompter or note cards, and he is pretty eloquent and thoughtful in what he says. Also, you can get a sense of their speech by watching the debates. Half the time they are speaking off the cuff and without notes. If you ever watch GWB speak off the cuff it's pretty cringeworthy, too, and I voted for him once. Trump is way worse, though, even if the graph shows that his grammar is better than GWB's. |
Actually, I want my doctor to be a one dimensional Asian American student rather than an Affirmative Action student. |
The ancestry of this particular, successful AA was half white. |
Thanks, "try hard" poster. |
Hsiu-Ying "Lisa" Tseng: 30 years in prison for the patients she killed. Prejudice is wrong even when you think it is a positive prejudice. |

True. Of course, it's much easier when the press is fawning over you. |
Cocky Cameron is just jealous of the undying love so many of us have for Obama. |
Prejudice implies that my preference is not based on actual knowledge. My prefrence is based on actual knowledge. For example, I could say you are an good Googler for finding an Asian physican who killed a patient. Since you are such a good Googler, see if you can find any non Asian physicians who killed patients. Thought so. |
