No one thinks its fine we just think it doesn't deserve this level of dramalama.

If I found out my kid did this I would get on them about it and probably take away a percentage of their candy. But a halloween trick as old as time perpetrated on someone silly enough to leave a bowl of free candy out on their front porch =/= Brock Turner.

How would you find out about it?

Eh, teenagers are going to smoke and drive. That's just what they do. Why get all worked up about typical teen stuff?

And smash pumpkins and mess with Christmas decorations.....

PP said that people think this is 'fine.' I'm saying its not fine and that if I found out about it I WOULD feel compelled to address it in some way with my kid.

But of course I likely would never find out about it. Just like plenty of other crappy things kids do over the course of their lives. I hope I have raised them well enough to feel super guilty about it at least!

I tried watching the video when it was first posted on the listserve to see if this was my kid, but it was taken down already. I would have wanted to know, so I could use it as a teaching lesson.

You can talk to your kid about it anyway. We probably all should.

Myself as well. FWIW I don't have issues with posting the video. If it was my kids I would want to know and I would talk to them about it. Yes, there are more important things in life than some rude kids on Halloween, but that doesn't mean it should be ignored. Treat others the way you would like to be treated is what I tell myself and my kids. That goes for little things and big things in life.

And I don't understand what is so hard to understand. We put a bowl of candy out with a note to please take two pieces each because my family enjoys trick or treating as a family. Neither my husband nor I want to be left at home while the other is having fun with our kids, seeing our neighbors and friends. Yet, we want to make sure that those trick or treating can collect some candy. It is really quite simple.

Ok then as long as you understand a kid will likely take the whole bowl, fine. you broke the social compact of "trick or treat" and so you got a trick.

It's baiting

It's baiting if you're going to be "shocked" when the candy isn't allocated as you hope. If you don't care one way or another, fine.

The person who posted the video is a douche, IMO

Huh? If I get an important call from work that I have to take, I'm going to put that bowl of candy on my front porch and close the door. I don't have time to answer the door and I don't want the candy to go to waste.

This is so interesting - my first reaction (I'm on the listserv) was that it was not okay to post the video of these kids. It was a public shaming that I'm not okay with. OTOH, the *behavior* was wrong - if they had just described it and people commented on it then I think that's fine. I'm surprised that this thread is 7 pages long and nobody is really discussing the video part of this. Kids make mistakes and a whole bowl of unattended candy is tempting, but parents should still let their kids know it is not okay.

Anyone who leaves the bowl out does not reserve the right to control the candy. Yes, most kids will only take a few pieces, especially if parents are close by, but it's Halloween for crying out loud, and older kids cleaning out the candy bowl
Is classic "trick" IMO.

Mean spirited neighbors to post security camera footage. Next time either man your door or don't leave it out!!!

So every kid out trick or treating should come home to a grilling from their parents? "Why is your bag so full?? You weren't the one who took the whole bowl of candy were you?" Or should the poster just put out a vague description of a girl age 9 to 11 with blond hair...and only the girls that meet that description should be grilled upon arriving home.

Or just put out the video out so the parent can recognize their kid and deal with it for what it is?
