Don't agree retiring before 70 makes you selfish but in my experience the boomers by in large a selfish. Their depression area parents were very generous to them but they aren't generous to their offspring.

I'll retire at 40 - kids will be 5 and 3 wife will be 35.
Kids will pay for education like I did, wedding is up them as well
We'll live well on 35% of current income

That's admirable.
But you sound like a jerk mandating that your kids pay for school. Not the choice that most compassionate parents with resources who trust their kids would make. But hey you did it, and you pulled yourself up by the bootstraps!

I don't see how that makes a parent a jerk, really. It's clearly a choice you don't agree with, which is fine. No need to call someone names.

DH will retire at 56. We have been a one income family for the last 15 yrs, prior to that, I made very little anyway, worked part time after kids were born. We will have more income when DH retires than we do now because of TSP savings and rental properties and loans being paid off. I do WAH now, contractor to a company 800 miles away and I may continue after DH retires. Kids will be 26 and 21. We will pay for college and a lot more.

We'd like to retire at 60, but we have a goal $$ and we will retire when we reach it.

That goal assumes that we do not renovate/buy a new house.

We plan to pay for college, but I will not work longer just to pay for grad school/wedding (who knows, maybe we will later, my parents paid for grad school/wedding)

Our kids will be 26/23.

PP Here. What do I plan to do? Travel the world. I want to retire "young" so that we are able enough to go around the world. I want to sleep late, read books, walk our dog for hours, go running, go to the gym, do whatever I/we want to do. Spend time with the kids, potential kids.

I work all the time, and I would love 20 years to sit by the pool and read.

I understand having a financial safety net for when you are older in case of health problems or simply being unable to work for other reasons, but these days people are living longer. What do you plan to do for 20+ years?

At what age would you like to retire?
How old will your kids be?
Would you voluntarily retire later to earn extra money to help your kids pay for college? Grad school? A wedding?
If your mortgage and childcare expenses are paid off by the time you retire, how much (or what percentage of your current income) will you need when you retire per year?

Age to retire - 65 (my DH will then be 71).

My kids will be 48 (stepDD), 40, 40, and 36.

I won't work later. We own our own business and enjoy it, but we love to travel and will be ready to enjoy our retirement before we become too infirm.

Mortgage is paid off in 4 years, when I'm 48, so that will be a relief. All kids will be long grown, so no child care expenses. Could live well on 50% of current income (not considering inflation).

DH is 70 and I am 68. He collects a CSRS pension and SS. I'll start drawing SS when I'm 70. Kids are in their 40's. We have about four years left on a mortgage from some remodeling. Health is good, knock on wood.

We could retire, but both still work b/c we like it. We do work a bit less and travel more.

I guess we'll keep it up until it isn't fun any more - or until mind/body start to go, whichever comes first.

We are retired already at 48 & 58 with $5M stashed and a monthly income of $20K. I'd say we are set and loving life!

Yep, we are living your dream already! Sorry!
