Toy/ gift recommendations for 12-24 months

Anonymous
DS's 1st birthday is coming up, and people are asking what gifts to buy. What are good toys for the 12-24 month set? We have push toys, blocks, tons of books, and a laugh and learn table. I can't think of anything else he really needs, but I feel like I should suggest something if people insist on buying gifts.

A wheely bug. Fisher price farm. Wooden puzzles. Bubble machine. Indoor tent. Ball. Thomas trains & wooden track (DS got interested just before age 2 in that). Pretend food.

These are the things mine have liked at the 1-2 age.

Someone gave my son a Ball Popper for his first b-day, a big hit. He is is now 16 months (still loves the Ball Popper), and also really loves a Little People set a family member gave him. And....the latter has its own storage...a little school house thing....BIG PLUS!! Something about those simple little people...

Hope your child has a great bday! This is a really fun age. (Well, it's all fun....but watching the learning going on now is really cool!)

I third the ball popper - I have an 18 month old and almost 3 yo and it is by far the best $30 ever spent. At 12 months my son spent 45 minutes playing with it.

I had a book party for my sons first birthday. I asked everyone to bring their favorite childrens story. It turned out well I got a lot of good classics and no repeats.

While it seems like an odd thing to suggest in January, but our DD loved her water table at that age last summer and we expect that she'll play in it again this upcoming summer. Good puzzles are also an idea (primary with big chunky pieces or the big knob puzzles with just a few pieces). Your child likely won't be ready by 12 months, but our 18 month old is now getting into using them.
