Cape Cod

We're thinking about planning a family vacation to Cape Cod this summer. We are looking for recommendations on which towns are best for families with kids (6 and 3 and half this summer), preferably within walking distance or a bike ride to a beach, shops/restaurants, and activities for the kids. Any recommendations on rental companies are also welcome. Thanks!

My family has a summer home in Chatham. It is the perfect location to vacation with children. Lots of beaches, great main street shopping area and Friday night band concerts, which children love. Here is the link to the Chamber of Commerce website:

Everyone seems to agree that Chatham is great for families. We always stay in Hyannis, but I know it doesn't have the same facilities (no beach, for example). The vineyard and Nantucket are both super kid friendly but then you are stuck there (fine if you are not interested in exploring the Cape).

We go to Falmouth every summer - our kids are now 4.5 and 2.5. Downtown Falmouth is very quaint with a lot of nice restaurants and shops. Like Chatham, it too has band concerts as well as baseball games (Cape Cod league). You can take the ferry to Martha's Vineyard from Falmouth, and since it is one of the first towns once you go over the bridge to get on the Cape, it does not have a lot of the traffic issues other towns have further up the Cape. We usually stay in Falmouth Heights which is walking distance to the beach and about a mile from downtown. Surf Drive is also another popular area near the beach. We have rented both a house and stayed at the Seaside Inn which is across the street from Falmouth Height beach. They have rooms with kitchenettes and a couple of suites.

Martha's Vineyard is actually quite large with 3 distinct towns to explore (Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, and Edgartown). All have different feels and provide a lot of things to do. There are also several smaller towns that you can drive to and of course many beaches. We used to go there every summer when I was growing up and I was never bored - it does not feel confining at all.
