Cost and time to build a wall dividing a large room

Anonymous
We are looking at possibly dividing a large room to make it into two rooms. Does anyone know how much it would cost in terms of materials and time. I am not sure what materials are needed but I think at least some 2 x 4s and drywall. The way we will divide the room, there will be windows and doors in each room and also electrical connections so we won't have that cost. I primarily need to look at how much it would cost. Thanks

Did you consider code requirements in deciding you don't need any outlets on the wall? Here's what I found: "Generally, receptacle outlets in habitable rooms shall be installed so that no point measured horizontally along the floor line in any wall space is more than 1.8 m [6'] from a receptacle outlet. A receptacle shall be installed in each wall space 2 feet or more in width."

Depends on length of wall. You'll need to remove some existing drywall to anchor the studs to the walls and top plate to ceiling. Remove some flooring for the bottom plate. Studs are placed 16" on center, so divide new wall length by that. Assuming ceilings are 8'. Then drywall. Depending on opening, you may need to frame a walkway or a doorway. Trim and molding costs depend on length and quality. Doing it yourself - add cost of nails, nailgun, drywall screws, drywall mud, etc. Price out materials based on your new wall length. If you dont do it yourself, you'll need about 1 day for framing and a few days for drywall. 1 day molding and trim. 1 day for paint. Etc. Material costs should be constant, if a little less for contractors due to discounts. Labor will vary.

Do you need two real rooms? What about installing floor to ceiling bookcases back to back with an opening for walk through as a room divider?

Depending on how large the wall is, I would guess maybe $2-3K minimum if you go the handyman route. As another poster suggested, if you don't need drywall enclosures; I would go the bookcase route or even room divider route.

Personally, I've been thinking about doing something like this for a den that I'd like to close off more into an office.

^ I also like the slats used as partial room divider in the Malibu beach house from that Netflix show:

It's the 8th picture in the gallery. I'm personally thinking about going through this route because drywall walls are pretty expensive, boring, and I don't want to block the light.

Any updated cost estimates for this?

About $1500 for the wall, then $800 top paint and trim, then $500x 2 for for the doors. Lets say $5000 tops.

I was quoted $5K total to do this in my basement.

In 2019 I paid 1500-2000 total to have a 25 foot wall added. I already owned the french doors that went in. Took about a week.
