bump on child's forehead from injury

Anonymous
My toddler son took a nasty spill about a month ago, hitting his forehead against a brick step. It didn't bleed but he got an enormous bump from it and two semi-black eyes. I took him to his doctor the day of the accident and he confirmed that nothing was broken and that the swelling would subside in a few days. It did, and the injury site is mostly healed, with just a faint red line where the step hit him. However, today I pressed gently against the site of the injury and felt a small soft mass underneath the skin. Could this be scar tissue? Will it go away eventually? If your kid has had a similar injury, I'm curious whether you think the presence of the bump is worth a second trip to the doctor's. If it matters, he was back to his old self within an hour of the accident.

Call the doctor and ask. I definitely wouldn't forgo care based on something you read here.

I'm not going to forgo care, I was just curious if others had had similar experiences. It takes a village, collective knowledge, and all of that.

My child has one too, right between her eyes, from an epic head-bonk she got last June. My dad (a doctor) said that the bone swelling that follows a nasty goose-egg bump can take 6 months or even a year to subside, but that it's normal, and will eventually go down.

My son did the exact same thing as yours, OP (tripped and went forehead-first into a brick step). He also had the soft bump under the skin for a long time. About 6 weeks after the accident I was at the ped for his 3-year well visit and she felt the bump and explained what 12:49 PP says. Just takes awhile to go down. And eventually it did... took a few months though. So you can cross this one off your worry list!

NP here. My son got this after a big bump when we was about 2. Had it checked out by the ped, who echoed 12:49's comments. It took a few months to disappear completely. The dent in our drywall is still there.

Our son has this as well. Fell and hit the top of his nose bridge on a table right between the eyes. Had a huge red mark and two black eyes. It has been several months and I still notice where he hit himself when he gets really upset and is crying becuase the mark comes back. I can also feel a bump although it is no longer visable. The doctor said he is fine, even if he broke it, there is nothing we can do. They said it tends to swell a lot there becuase there is excess skin for when the face features grow. Sounds like the injury is pretty common, especially for active little boys
