Gingerbread Kit

Anonymous
Anyone know where I can buy a kit to make a gingerbread house with my 3 year old this evening? I don't have the energy to make it all by hand (pregnancy with #2) but want to do something fun for DD!

If you are feeling brave Costco had an awesome kit which came with a tray that helped with the assembly. I also saw our Safeway had pre-assembled houses to be decorated which is nice.

The most likely place is Michaels or AC Moore's. I've also seen them at some Targets but not consistently. I am impressed that you will muster the energy to do this tonight. I'm not even pregnant and all I can think about is sitting around the fire and having a pizza delivered after Mass tonight.

I just whipped up royal icing (3 cups powdered sugar, 2 egg whites, lemon juice) and made a simple little shed to decorate with graham crackers in less than 10 minutes (similar to the ones kids do in preschool). Buy a few little bags of candies at the drugstore and you are ready to decorate it after the icing dries (an hour tops).

Chevy Chase Market had a kit for 60 bucks!!! There was no way I was paying that no matter how tired/busy I feel. Ikea has cheap kits but I'm sure the place is crazy.

Call Williams-Sonoma. They had them last week for $20. World Market and Rodman's were sold out. Sur La Table had them for around $35.

Thank you for the suggestions! I just called Williams Sonoma at White Flint and of course they HAD them, but are sold out I work full-time so even though I'm pregnant, I feel like the time I have with DD needs to be packed full of things to create wonderful memories! Let's see how I feel after a half-day of work though and if I'm still up for it tonight. I love the suggestion to use graham crackers. That is a WONDERFUL idea - b/c it looks like local stores (I also called Target) are hit/miss. I can always swing by the grocery store and get some candy and make icing and we can decorate with the graham crackers. Happy Holidays to you all!

Giant had them the other day. They were $16.99, though. We made the rice krispie house instead because I didn't want to fork over the bucks.

Look on the Rice Krispy website for the house directions. It came out sooooooooooooooooo cute!

Have fun and happy holidays.

Here's a helpful tip if you want to try it ---

When I make a house like this from the kit, I don't use the frosting that they include to glue the sides together. That stuff never holds together well for me and is too gloppy.

Instead, I melt about 1 C regular table sugar in a frying pan over medium heat for about 2 minutes, stirring every so often until the stuff all melts into a liquid. Quickly bring it to te table, and use that sugar-glue to glue all the sides together. It holds quickly. DOn't let kids near it and watch your fingers, it is VERY hot. But you can assemble the house very quicly and it will be very sturdy, then the kids can go nuts!

Have fun!

I bought one yesterday from the Williams-Sonoma in Mazza, and it was on sale for $16.

If you use graham crackers, I strongly recommend makng a stack of crackers glued together with icing and attaching the sides and roof to the stack. If you just make an empty cube, unless your icing is very strong, it can easily collapse (esp after you've loaded it up with lots of goodies!).
