Custom cake bakeries

Anonymous
Have any of you ever come across bakeries that makes custom cakes for special occasions such as birthdays, baby showers, etc. but which have a policy that they won't sell you their cake if you plan to also serve a cake at the party from another bakery or store??? I was told by one bakery that this policy is pretty standard among custom cake designers, but I have a hard time believing that.

How would they even know? It's never come up because I guess I don't go into details when I order the cake.

OP here - the woman actually asks people whether they plan to serve another cake when they place the order. Of course you could lie, but most first-timers probably just honestly answer the question.

17:05 - Hmmm. That's weird. She sounds like a PITA. I'd find a different baker.

That certainly would turn me off. Ridiculous policy. You should be confident in your cake that you don't care what else is being served.

I have heard about this at one particular bakery in Alexandria (Mt. Vernon area) and we won't use them because of it.

OP to PP: yep, we're talking about the same place then.
My guess is that she's the only one with that policy...

How weird. OP, i'd do your cake for you.

I appreciate that... I typically just make my own cakes. When someone told me about that policy, I just had to go down there and inquire about it though. Funny thing is that she thinks she'll lose business if people eat a store-bought cake & think it's one of hers. Doesn't seem to occur to her that her policy might be what drives people away.

Sounds like a "Seinfeld" episode
