Stuffing in the crock pot?

Anonymous
I love stuffing when it's actually stuffed inside the turkey, and find it's usually rather dry and flavorless otherwise ... BUT I know it's much safer to bake the turkey unstuffed. Anyone ever make stuffing in the crock pot? How did it work out? Any recipes?

My grandmother made dressing in the crock pot last year due to a lot of prodding of a new daughter in law. In all honesty, we hated it, It was like mush. Everyone seemed to try it but the only one who ate it and enjoyed it was the new member of the family. That was our experience..

Stuffing may turn out differently due to the bread difference.

Bake it in the oven in a pan, keep it covered for a while, then uncover towards the end to dry it out to taste

Washington Post article today suggested baking the stuffing in muffin tins --the author said it came out great.

I would not use a crock pot -- save it for mashed potatoes or something.

We always cook our stuffing separate from the bird. I find that both the stuffing and the turkey turn out better because you can cook them each just right. In order to keep you stuffing moist and flavorful, you have to make sure to moisten it with plenty of turkey stock - make it from the neck, tail, and wingtips with celery, onion, and carrot.

Also, are you making your stuffing from scratch? I have never had flavorless stuffing and I use a pretty basic recipe - bread, celery, onion, sage, thyme, a bit of butter, turkey stock, salt and pepper. It shouldn't need to cook very long - just long enough to get a bit golden on top.
