Frosting for cupcakes - store-bought or homemade?

Anonymous
Debating whether or not to try to make homemade icing for birthday party cupcakes this weekend or buy store-bought.

Is there a really good store-bought brand you can recommend? Or an easy recipe that tastes good? Thanks!

oh go homemade for sure.

do you like super sweet frosting? this is very easy. it's close to the style of "bought" frosting, not european style, very sweet and easily colored. but it tastes better because of the butter.

magnolia bakery's buttercream:

even better (if you don't like things overly sweet) and just as easy is cream cheese frosting.

I did homemade for our last birthday and I couldn't believe the difference. I used cocoa pawder and made chocolate buttercream. I remember eating the leftovers with a spoon!

Yeah, the Magnolia bakery recipe is just a basic 1-2-3-4 cake with the frosting recipe from the back of Domino's powdered sugar box. I don't understand how Magnolia bakery has been able to market such a basic recipe into such a hyped product. Not that I don't like a 1-2-3-4 cake (it's my go-to recipe), it's just that it is as basic as cake recipes get.

And I say a homemade icing -- I prefer a cream cheese or a 7-minute frosting.

Next time you make vanilla or coconut cupcakes, try this Lime Buttercream. So good--I wanted to bury my face in the bowl. LOL!

My daughters birthday is tomorrow and I made red velvet cupcakes from a box and home made cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients
•1/2 cup of butter (1 stick), room temperature
•8 oz of Philly cream cheese (1 package), room temperature
•2 - 3 cups of powdered sugar
•1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Method
1 With an electric mixer, mix the butter and cream cheese together, about 3 minutes on medium speed until very smooth. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl to ensure even mixing.

2 Add the vanilla extract and mix. Slowly add the powdered sugar. Keep adding until you get to desired sweetness.

3 Either spread on with a blunt knife or spatula, or spoon into a piping bag to decorate your cake or cupcake.
