How many days in a row can you safely take Advil?

Anonymous
I've been taking it about 3x per day for a week for an acute issue. Too much?

Too much. This can really hurt your stomach. I would take Tylenol if you have to take a painkiller this often. I ended up needing a course of the "little purple pill" (Prilosec?) because I abused NSAIDs like you are doing.

Read the label instructions. Look it up on the internet. Call your physician. Call a pharmacist.

Answers that you'll get here are anecdotal and cannot be trusted.

It's usually recommended to take pain relievers for no more than 10 days. What do the directions say? Are you the person who posted about pain after getting cavities filled? Please go see another dentist for a second opinion as to what's wrong.

Wrong wrong wrong. It's aspirin that irritates the stomach.

Tylenol causes liver damage when taken too long, or in high doses.

Advil is a much safer drug. I don't know what 3x a day means (need to know the dosage) but lots of doctors will recommend long-term ibuprofin use. In fact, the longer you use it, the better certain problems get. Its anti-inflammatory effect means that certain muscular problems will heal better/stronger with regular use.

And this is exactly the kind of misinformation I'm talking about (PP at 12:13). Aspirin can irritate your stomach, but ADVIL/IBUPROFEN/MOTRIN can be very damaging to your stomach - it can cause ulcers, bleeding, etc.

Please, just call your doctor.

Also - I'd be quite hesitant to take medical advice from a poster who cannot spell the name of the drug she's talking about. (That's you, 12:20.) It's ibuprofen - with an E.

Both Aspirin AND NSAIDS (Advil, etc.) are very hard on your stomach.

Isn't Tylenol an NSAID as well?

No.

NSAID = Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Tylenol is not anti-inflammatory.

I would consult a doctor, but for what it is worth, taking too many NSAIDS caused me to get a stomach ulcer.

Oh my god, do call your doctor! Advil/ibuprofen/motrin (all the same) CAN and DO CAUSE ulcers, stomach irritation, bleeding, etc. If you do take it, take it with food to 'soften the blow' to the stomach. Anyway, posters like 12:13 are very scary in their self righteousness and 'WRONG WRONG WRONG' information.

My dad almost died from a bleeding ulcer (black tarry stools, etc) from taking too much motrin. He had a stint in an ICU for 5 days for it.
