Jeff consider a "gifted child" forum.

Anonymous
A bit tired of the parents who feel a need to discuss their gifted child. Please give them their own forum.

every parent would be in that forum.

You would also need a "super-gifted" forum for those parents whose children are so gifted that they shouldn't be grouped with the merely gifted.

Why are people so negative about gifted children! If your child is truly gifted then you would know that it is not a gift at!

a gift at all!

just a reality that every parent thinks that there child is "gifted".

Parenting a gifted kid can be hard and dealing with hostility that's both apparent and subtle is part of everyday life for both the parents and the kids themselves.

Parents daring to discuss their trials or post questions here are usually met with a lot of ugliness but there usually are one or two helpful posts if you can stomach to keep reading. Seeing the venomous responses given on this forum certainly has made me more guarded in real life on the matter.

I'd be curious if Jeff has an opinion on the subject.

Mission accomplished!

"I'd be curious if Jeff has an opinion on the subject."

Huh?

The original post was not serious so the only opinion that I have about it is that it should be ignored. If you are asking if I have an opinion about a forum for gifted children, I don't think there is much demand for such a forum. If you are asking if I have an opinion about ugly responses to posts about gifted children, I haven't noticed such responses but I wouldn't be surprised about them. This is a snarky group of people to begin with and any post suggesting that your child might be better than their child in any, even minor, way would undoubtedly set them off. The people of DCUM are capable of great compassion and I have seen them treat victims of terrible events with remarkable civility and kindness. But, just once suggest an iota of superiority and a great deal of viciousness comes out.

Your opinion is appreciated. I was hoping that the fearless leader of DCUM might stick up for the little guy here but to no avail. There's a lot of bullying that goes on when it comes to this topic and I always cringe when some unsuspecting parent posts a question about what educational choices are around for their gifted kid, etc. I don't know if it's just the population at large or a few regulars that have a strong opinions on the subject.

Gifted kids are not better, yet they are different; and because they are, they face different issues. The lack of empathy and rejection by others, including adults and peers, is commonplace for many of these children. Parents of gifted children are socially isolated fearing they sound boastful or arrogant if they speak or ask questions about their child's ability or differences.

If handling a high iq child is difficult, why not just post in/merge with the special needs forum? The fact is superhigh IQ may not be a gift, so don't call it a gift. Call it a situation which requires specialized services.

I am always willing to stick up for the little guy. As I have said many times in other threads, if you ever feel that a message in inappropriately disrupting a thread, use the "report" button to bring the message to my attention. I can't guarantee that I will always agree with you, but at least I will know about it.

Gifted just happens to be the technical term that psychologists use when describing an iq 132 or above.

I thought it was 145 or above. At 145 or above that is 1 in 1000 children. There are 103,000 children between 5 and 19 in DC (although obviously more in the broader metro area). So that means there are c. 103 highly gifted to profoundly gifted children in DC.
