can someone help explain very rich, southern culture to me?

Woah, who is this PP defending slavery? Filter back in your hole. We don’t need that kind of warped attitude on dcum. For those who are intrigued by the duality of the south, I found Charleston interesting. The downtown looks like Old Town or Georgetown, but more pink and pastel. But the air of slavery definitely hangs thickly over the city. That place is defibitely haunted by its slaveholding past. Dont skip a visit to the new African American museum. I spent a good 10 minutes crouching down to examine a diagram of how the space ships were packed, as though people folded like lawn chairs. It was gut churningly horrifying. Most enslaved people who came to the Americas came through the port in Charleston.

Ugh, sorry for all the typos. Slave ships, not space ships!

Not the oil money folks. The wildcatting in Texas began in the early years of the 20th century, and most of the wildcatters—like my great grandfather—were not rich to begin with. They sure ended up that way though.

No one is talking about Texas. This is obviously about the SE and the Deep South.

If you have read this thread and think it doesn’t apply to Texas culture, then you know absolutely nothing about the south and should not be commenting.

I knew he came from great wealth, but had no idea how much so until we were invited to his sisters wedding this past weekend in a very top notch southern resort.

we got to spend time with them off and on for three days and I was captivated. First of all, they could not have been nicer, incredibly well mannered, and impeccably dressed. Even for a casual dinner most of the guys had sports jackets on which I loved. The women were so meticulous, I found it almost intimidating, and again, not sure if this is how they mostly are, or the exception?

they seem extremely close somewhat formal and almost too nice for it to be real. Is this just the way things are? are they this way? No matter what in front of strangers and or out of the family circle?

his family owns three or four homes, and she said when she has gone, which mostly have been over holidays, that large groups of extended family are there together. Personally, I find it admirable, but I am curious if this is inherent to the rich, southern culture, or if this is an exception? I find it so interesting because it’s so vastly different from how I grew up.

sorry for my computer keyboard is sticking!

Troll. There's someone here who loves to make up scenarios and wax rhapsodic over the beauty, grace, charm, and manners of the wealthy. A couple of years ago it was about a group of private school students at a Starbucks.
+10. Same Troll!

Yep. The British brought them. Many came on Dutch ships. This is not uniquely American. Many were slaves in their own countries before they came. I'm not defending it, just increasing awareness.

Even the Smithsonian AA museum has maps and displays showing the Africans sold conquered African tribes were rounded up and sold to slave ships and the majority went east to Arab countries. The Mideast doesn’t have a 5-10% African descent minority however because they castrated the male slaves first. Next to shows flows to S America largest, then Caribbean and much smaller, to N America.

I saw that on my visit, too.

I don’t think BLM adherents bother to educate themselves on historical facts. That would interfere with their moneymaking schemes…

No. Maryland is definitely not the south.

I went to Elementary School in Bowie in Prince Georges County. The music teacher had the class singing Dixie pretty regularly.
Then we moved to Frederick. Our once a week cleaning lady did not have running water or flushing toilets in her house. She lived in Boonsboro.

Maryland is the south. I worked in Virginia. We would get biscuits and gravy in the morning at work in Virginia. Virginia is also in the south.

It’s technically the south but it’s very different than the Deep South.

I like places with respect, manners and social niceties.

I do think Op is a troll who’s repeating material all the time in DCUM.

I believe Jeff gets more ad revenue the more activity- troll or not - there is.

So DCUM want downhill fast this year.

Absolutely applies to TX!

We live in Old Town and most guys I know wear a sports coat to dinner. Pretty common in the DMV. OP, I think part of it might be your social circle or SES.

Is this your stupid way of going "look over there at the non-whites!" to somehow absolve "the west"? Now do the 1950s south where people like you would've been one of those grotesque people who stated "Are nigras is happy."

I bet you love those "white savior" movies.

BTW, that doesn't mean I don't think the head of BLM isn't a thief, but I'm so sick of this sh*t where you just convince yourself everyone else but white people gets some free ride.
