And I think you are naive (and that’s putting it nicely) to believe the other guys will be better. Yes I have a problem with the status quo—but I’m saying the alternative-as it stands-is worse. Do you get that? You (general you) keep harping about the Dems and the stupid SB but none of you have actually said how the GOP aligned candidates would make it better. People have asked in multiple threads. How would these candidates change things up in FCPS? How are Republican led boards championing academics elsewhere in the country? Are red districts emphasizing academics and getting better results? And the response is—well the current board sucks, everything has sucked, the Democrats ruined it all! Great but that still doesn’t answer any of the aforementioned questions. |
DP. There need to be SB members who will challenge each other both in private and public. We don’t have that now; it hasn’t worked out well; and that’s why many of us who generally lean left and vote Democratic want to disrupt the current echo chamber. It’s missing the point to simply focus on whether Ds “suck” or the GOP candidates are “worse.” They are basically the choices we have right now and what we ought to do is ensure that neither party completely dominates the SB again (which, realistically, means making sure there are a least a few R or I members to challenge the next D majority). |
This has already been answered. Many candidates are against equity efforts. That’s enough to stop the problems most people are actually interested in. Equity is the academic problem many seek to solve. |
Similar arguments like this were probably made when the feds forced states to integrate schools in the 1960s. |
Isn’t “equity” a problem that FCPS needs to answer someone for? (The Federal government? The state?). It (The achievement gap) just doesn’t go away bc you don’t address it. So how are these candidates addressing it? |
They can’t. This is a family problem. Not a school one. |
I mean don’t the federal and state governments require school districts to show they are trying to close the achievement gap? Don’t school districts have to abide by 504/IEPs (I.e, I hear teachers say sometimes they can’t discipline students bc of the threat of being sued for not following such and such plan)? The SB can’t just say “meh we don’t have to deal with it.” |
So they are clueless. Find a rational, informed candidate if you want coherent SB discussion. Until then… |
Yes. If there is too much disparity between racial groups or students with disabilities schools lose state/federal funding. |
They repealed NCLB years ago. Now schools get more oversight and more money when they're failing. |
+100 This obstinate, "I'll never vote for a Republican!" attitude is even more stupid considering the same people will continue complaining about the SB when Democrats are all elected - yet again. What's the definition of insanity again? |
There actually were several posts saying that all they want is for the school board to drop its focus on social issues and instead focus on improving academics for all students. That would be a huge step in the right direction, and having a few Republicans on the board to make sure that happens is common sense. Twelve Democrats only creates a ridiculous echo chamber of "progressive" idiocy. Maybe you're fine with the SB wasting hours and hours on things like renaming schools, or making sure their curriculum has the words "equity, intersectionality, and anti-racist" 5 million times, as well as a bunch of other nonsense jargon that NO ONE cares about? I would prefer all of that be cut out and the SB spend their time beefing up academics, period. Bringing back phonics was something many parents - conservative and moderate alike - had been begging FCPS to do for years. The only reason they finally did was because the NAACP asked them to. It's just nutty. Why couldn't they have done that long ago, seeing how their "whole word" system was NOT teaching children to read? These people are failing. Why on earth would anyone vote them in again? |
DP. Please tell us: what EXACTLY should be done to address "equity"? The left loves to insert that word into everything they say. Tell us what you think it means and how the SB should be "addressing it." |
I guess there is no need for Youngkin to intervene regarding the student teaching students. FCPS high school students have already set up an organization to teach other poor performing students at various Fairfax county libraries. http://www.giveyouth.org |
Again-are you actually reading the responses? Not “I’ll never vote for a Republican” but rather I will not vote for the Republican options presented after doing research. |
