Dyslexia & FCPS

To the PP with the child that is on grade level: We got a private eval that documented DD's dyslexia (terrible visual memory, spelling and mechanical scores countered by high auditory/phonemic awareness, digit naming and conceptual scores that in the end made the overall scores come out nearly dead average. So her diagnosis is LD - NOS. She is in the AAP program and reads and comprehends well, so qualifying for services in FCPS was a non-starter. What she did qualify for is an 504 plan as a result of the extreme anxiety she experienced, especially when she was in 3rd grade, in trying to pass the spelling tests and have her writing mechanics understood (she spells phonetically, like the Chick Fila cows...), line up columns and keep her work straight in math, interpret maps and figure out how to fill them in, etc. So, we have a child labeled as having anxiety when what she really has is an LD. In any event, we took it upon ourselves to get private tutoring, practice with her at home (she still is a terrible speller but her writing is comprehensible) and the teachers seem to look the other way when it comes to her poor spelling. Still, her grades are impacted by her LD. Pretty much a B student, when her intellect suggests she should be performing better.

Okay. Old post but it appears nothing changes with FCPS with Dyslexia and other LDs.

1. FCPS failed my oldest. He goes to Oakwood school and within 1 year, he caught up to grade level (3rd grade) and is confident to learn. Oakwood is expensive and you must be accepted but grants are available for assistance.

2. Don't agree with IEP testing. You are entitled to an IEE (look it up). Free testing is one email away (BY LAW!!!!!). FCPS dirty little secret. The IEE is third party testing paid by FCPS. You will see 2 different reports that typically show 2 different results (does "your kid is average" sound familiar!).

Don't pay for a private report. Get FCPS to pay the the report via the IEE!!!!!!!
