Is anyone still on the waitlist for 5th grade hoping to get in? I am trying to gauge chances for next year (5th grade) . . . . seems like the school is getting more and more popular. |
So far BASIS 5th grade hasn't cleared its wait list which would be the first time that happened but they still went deep into it and most who wanted slots and listed BASIS in the initial lottery got offers.
OTOH they do take students up until 5th. If slots open up elsewhere I'm certain some families would move, and a handful who are enrolled now may decide it isn't for them. Classes started on 8/20 -- and the meet the teachers / back to school night is the week after Labor Day FWIW. |
Fixing typo - take students up until Oct 5 (count day) |
I have friends who children are still on the waitlist. |
Basis is getting more and more popular because it is getting better and better. They really respond to what DC parents want so there is still amazing academics with less homework and more extracurricular options. We are very happy although we are considering a move to VA for high school next year to give a more traditional "high school" experience and to bring her instate for university. I don't know any unhappy basis parents who visited the school with their kids and have their kids the option. It was dd's first choice and she is at home in this school. I have heard that some parents don't like it but if that's true, they must have not given their kids the option.
Best of luck! We're lucky that we got in years ago! |
I'm have 2 kids at BASIS and while not nearly as gung-ho as this PP I agree the school is getting better and is trying to address long-standing issues (e.g. ELA instruction/curriculum in middle school as evidenced by the significant improvement on 2017 PARCC). Some not great teachers didn't return this year although they lost a couple good ones too. The current HOS (who actually was brought back for a second year!!) is really strong. Not sure the rest of her admin team is up to her level, but most people aren't. Hopefully the BASIS powers that be in Arizona will let her stay put for at least another 2-3 years to cement what she is doing. |
Not everyone has an option. If it is BASIS or your neighborhood school Brookland - you select BASIS even if you do not think it is a fit for your child. |

Why lucky? Everybody who wants to go got in years ago, and almost everybody gets in today. |
Still 50+ on the 5th grade WL this year, so not almost everybody (many were post-lottery additions, so not showing on the MSDC chart) And clearly the PP meant she felt fortunate to have ended up in a school that suits her kid. |
School is improving year-by-year both in terms of quality of the student body as well as the administration. It is demanding academically especially from sixth grade onwards. It does suffer from typical charter school issues such as a limited facility but it still is a middle school for my self motivated learner. |
These comments seem to be written by BASIS boosters. People with 3 digit waitlist number are receiving calls. |
I wish. We are still in the 50's, as I posted in another thread. We would jump on the chance to move. |
So school has started and you're still not in? |
She posted on a different thread that she is not in, her kid is not happy in current school and she wold take a BASIS slot if offered. |
