They Left My Purse at the Table

Anonymous
Ok-So this is one of those ‘Am I being too sensitive’ posts.

To the chase:

Went out with 2 colleagues turned friends this evening. At one point I excused myself to use the restroom, leaving my purse behind on the empty chair.

A few minutes later they entered the restroom-leaving my purse behind! I though Girl Code dictates you take the other person’s bag with you (and take it to them) if it’s been left behind and you’re leaving the vicinity.

I have no intention of confronting them about it (when they walked in I said “You guys left my purse?” And went to retrieve it) but I would like to know if I’m being a bit overly sensitive here. Ive been trying to figure out if I can truly consider them friends, keep my distance anyway which is why I’m paying attention to such a minor (or not) thing.

That only comes into play if you explicitly ask them to watch your stuff. Otherwise they might not even realize or remember is there.

I always jokingly say 'Hey, make sure no one steals my $1,000 phone while I'm at the buffet'.

Then they know to keep an eye out.

I would never do that to someone and I wouldn't consider someone a friend if they did it to me.

Wouldn't make a fuss though, just not really see them again (at least not in a context where I needed to trust them for anything).

Did you say “hey, can you watch my purse while I’m in the restroom?”.

Did you ask them to keep an eye on your purse?

If it was on the chair, they probably did not see it and thought you took it with you.

Did you ask them to watch your purse? Was it visible? Honestly this seems like your responsibility not theirs.

Did you tell them to watch it? I honestly wouldn’t have realized you didnt take it with you... especially if I had a drink or two.

I would be annoyed and think they were careless. When I go out, one of us stays at the table while the other is in the restroom, without ever discussing it; I would find it really odd they abandoned the table. But beyond that I wouldn't be upset:no harm done. Next time you'll know to take your purse.

This. I don't really understand going to the restroom without your purse in the first place. Why didn't you bring it with you?

OP here-

No, I did not ask them to watch my purse. I’ll own that. (I assumed they’d remain at the table while I went to the restroom.)

However it was very visible in the chair next to one of the women. You could see it from across the room.

When they entered the red and I asked ‘Did you leave my purse?’ one responded “Yeah” as I raced out to go get it.

Which means everyone's drinks were unattended as well—that should bother you just as much, if not more.

This should read ‘When they entered the *restroom*’.

Your response was dramatic, passive aggressive and noted.

No one was drinking. We’d gone out for dinner.
