I have an 8th grader at Sligo. I'm trying to get a head start on the high school choice thing in the DCC. We are zoned to Einstein and based on neighbor feedback, assumed DC would go there. DC is a computer science kid, and I'm not seeing any computer science classes offered there in this year's course bulletin. What's up with computer classes at Einstein. |
Einstein parent here. I know they have Foundations and AP computer science classes. Through the Business department. Not sure what's going on with the course bulletin, but you could contact the Counseling department to confirm. |
I haven't looked at the online course catalogue lately, but both AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A (Java) are both offered. Check under the Business Dept. courses. |
I found this curriculum guide for Einstein. Check out p. 16. Your DC does not have to take Foundations of CS before the AP's, unless DC wants to do 4 years of CS as a program completer (substitute for foreign language requirement). The rub is that Einstein is not positive it will be able to offer a 4th year experience (internship). I think that Carla Mackey is the contact person for this at Einstein. http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools/einsteinhs/counseling/2018-2019%20course%20bulletin%20FINAL%20copy.pdf |
There is also the possibility of doing the new cybersecurity program at Edison. It would be offered as a half-day program, with bus service from the home school. |

Your DC might also want to consider the Academy of Information Technology at Wheaton High. There, the 4 year pathway is already set up and running. Wheaton is gaining a very techy reputation. If your DC is passionate about music, however, he/she may be out of luck there. |
Northwood also offers a Tech/Engineering Academy/Pathway. You probably would want to check with the school to make sure that the advertised classes are indeed offered every year. All this being said, my DC loves Einstein! (for different reasons)

What are those reasons? -nosy newbie mom of rising Einstein freshman |
Great school spirit. Diverse group of kids (culturally, socioeconomically, academically) with a diverse subgroup of high academic performers. Fabulous AP History and AP Gov teachers. (DD has taken only two AP's so far). Wonderful arts programs (including theatre and dance). Lots of lunchtime performances on Main Street (they're called flash mobs, although they're preplanned and students suspect something when their artsy classmates are dismissed from class early). |
PP again- Students also seem to go to a wide variety of colleges. I've seen a couple of kids per year go off to Ivy League schools in the last couple of years. There always seem to be several who go to elite SLACS, others who go to top 20 OOS public universities. At least one has gone to a top Canadian school each of the last two years. UMD, UMBC, etc. |
Extremely accurate , my child goes to Einstein and adores it. Also the top school for an arts education in Montgomery County and a very diverse school. My oldest graduated from Einstein VAC and is doing great in college. |
Low standards are easy to meet |
I don't understand how the standards can be low. There are kids who get 5's on the AP that they take freshman year (APUSH). There are some students who take AP Calculus AB as sophomores. If that's low standards, I'll take it. |
